Hi Folks, I'm actually an MG5 owner taking an S5 for a spin shortly, and I was asking the dealer the likelyhood that there will be an XR version of the S5, as it's based on the MG4? I got caught out last time buying the MG5 SR and then they launched the LR version 3 weeks later!

Anyhow, he said it didn't seem likely, as the MG4XR had been discontinued. It's still listed on the MG website, so does anyone else know about this?

First I've heard about the MG4 ER being discontinued ... maybe the uptake has been very poor so they're going to stop making the 77kWh battery pack? 🤷‍♂️

I'd be surprised, I thought people were all about the range, but it's true we don't seem to have many ER owners on the forum. If I liked the Trophy, I'd think the ER was the sweet spot.

We've been expecting Xpower and ER versions of the MGS5, but not aware of confirmation.

You'd think an ER version of a bigger car would be even more popular than it would be for a hatchback - family trips etc.

But then maybe manufacturers are realising that 50-70kWh capacity is perfectly adequate when there are rapid charging options available.

Indeed. I've been to the Isle of Lewis recently and the journeys were comfortably made in my SE SR. Yes I had 2 stops each way, and could have done it with a single stop with the 64kWh LR battery, but I needed those stops anyway. :)

Happened to be in our local MG dealer today and noticed they had an Orange MG4 ER in their showroom.

Out of curiosity I opened the glovebox and found the CoC.

Their brand new unregistered MG4 ER was made on the 30.04.2023!

I got made redundant in Jun 2023 and had a notion to buy an MG4 X-Power and had asked in the same dealer if they had an XR available for test drive, they didn't but they had a Orange one due any day, I wonder if that is the car mentioned above.

As I never heard from them again I always assumed someone had bought it, perhaps I was wrong.

Always seems to me that dealers are too arrogant for their own good, would they be more proactive if it were their own money they had lying about a showroom.

My understanding is it is the dealers property, they get x months of interest free and then they get charged interest, that is why the test cars change every so often, they sell them before the interest starts piling up and encourages them to have the newest car on the forecourt.

If this has any truth in it, I'll be hanging on to mine come the day. It's a great car to drive and the extra oomph makes for a fun drive.😁 Maybe that's why I got it so cheap🤔, I'll ask my dealer when it goes in for it's service.

Thanks for that nugget of info Steve, I'm going to have a rummage in the glovebox tomorrow when it's daylight and see if I can find the CoC. It never occurred to me that it would be proof of MY. It'll be buried under the dusters and sweets box somewhere 😁

I love my ER. Public charging is so stupidly expensive that I prefer to do most of my charging at home.

The ER made sense for me as I have a long commute twice a week which the ER can do without me needing to charge away from home, even in the cold winter months.

If public charging was a sensible, fair, price I would use it but as things are the extra price of the ER, which I got as x demonstrator at a good price, will save me money long term by keeping public charge costs down 🤷‍♂️

Hi Rolfe, you're right, I seem to be the only one here😳🤔, and you're right again about it being a sweet spot😁

I'm probably irrationally biassed against the Trophy trim, but I like the spartan layout and lack of fuss in the SE. But the really long range of the ER and its faster acceleration sound like nice things to have.

I have sometimes wondered if I should have gone for the LR. The thing is, I don't need these extra stops for myself. And the faster charging time would be nice to have. But the number of times it would be an advantage to me isn't great. I'm off to visit a friend in Maybole next week, 72 miles, and it's obvious I can do it without charging, round trip. And if it's looking dodgy - say if I take my friends joyriding while I'm there - a short stop at Cairn Lodge or Abington on the way back is hardly going to kill me.

One of me thoughts about the SR was that I hope to keep the car for its lifetime, and the LFP battery is said to have better longevity. And it does let me be superior when the haters start on about child slaves!

I've never regretted getting the SE SR. My friends have just got a Trophy and a hadn't realized until now that the rear ends are so completely different. I thought it was just the addition of a spoiler. When parked side by side I really prefer the look of my SE. Then there is the fact that the Trophy seems to have more features that can (and do) go wrong. I am jealous of the auto folding wing mirrors but I wasn't going to play an extra £6k for that.

I had the same debate with myself. As I was an early adopter there were no discounts, so the LR would have cost me £2.5k more ... that's a lot of public rapid charging!

I've had the car for 2.5 years ... I'd be surprised if I've spent £300 in public rapid charging in that whole time. At that rate it would take about 20 years to make up that £2.5k cost difference. :)
