MG4 Extended range discontinued?

I did our longest trip since getting our ER yesterday. Mostly motorway from Stafford to Heathrow and back. 310 miles with 3% (11m) remaining. Aircon on some of the time or window open and achieved 4.5 m/kWh. I did consider a stop on the way back for a quick quirt of kWh but decided to see exactly what was possible. Recharging to 100% now for an unscheduled equalisation as I don't usually see sub 10% very often.

I am very pleased with the ER, as someone whose range anxiety put me off getting an EV for a long time, I wouldn't have got an MG4 without that extra range.

I've never used it - either travelling too far in a round trip, so I'd need to charge come what may, or would always have gotten home anyway. But a) the peace of mind of having that extra range and b) the extra acceleration, which is very nice.

Isn't that the issue then? There are not enough people actually needing or thinking they need the extra range - hence why there so few ER's have been sold in the UK.

With DC fast chargers, a top up takes a few minutes, a big charge adding 60-80% takes around 20-25mins. Why is that a restriction?

Except, we hear from loads of people that range is a big issue for them when deciding whether to go EV - we even have a member on the Isle of Wight who went for the ER - and the better acceleration is definitely an attraction too.

The price they charge for DC fast charging is the restriction in the UK. The ER was worth it for me to, mostly, avoid DC fast charge costs.

Most will have a home charger and most will not be making frequent long journeys that consume a whole charge. Even then, the occassional top up through a DC charger won't make any noticeable difference to the cost of energy consumed. EV manufacturers target market will be thise that fall into this segment of users as that's where the profits will generated.

The extra range of the 77 vs 64kWh battery made the difference for us. We were initially only looking at the 51 (or maybe the 64 for the more efficient energy consumption) for my wife's "town car" usage. Her's was the ICE that was due for replacement.

Due to a serendipitous set of events we ended up getting a 77 for the price of the 64 which we'd got for a great deal anyway...

Due to the distances involved in my trips interstate in Australia even the 77 was just good enough for the longest leg (albeit now a year later a couple of extra chargers have been installed in a key location and a 64 would now just be good enough).

I drove it for a few long trips and proved that it would work for me... so we replaced my VW Passat Alltrack as the Country Car with the 77.

After we ended up with that, we actually then got another MG4, this time a 51 to cater for our Town Car use case and both of us couldn't be happier :)

Sounds perfect. I just have the 51 and it has to handle the 450-mile trips as well, but since these are infrequent it's not really a problem.
