MG4 - How do I turn it off..?

Not to be otherwise but asking if there is a way to turn the car off, without first having to get out of it...doesn't feel particularly overthought. Given every other reply is folks agreeing with me that it is annoying.

Yes, what you describe is an option. But having the car 'off' but just unlocked is a practical state for the car to be in, particularly while loading or unloading, or just waiting in the car for 5 minutes.

The real-world application usually means I have SOMETHING in one or both of my hands. Which then means getting to the keys (so handily in my pocket) means I need to be a contortionist to get to the pocket in question...but only after I have physically left the car, usually with my hands full. Every other car I know has a start/stop. It's not like I am asking for a radical departure from what every other car maker thinks is a sensible button.

An extension of the position you're taking, is 'I don't understand the kerfuffle, to turn off the motion sense alarm I only need to stand on one leg, hop up and down 3 times while facing slightly north-east while humming the theme tune to Apocalypse Now in the key of F'. It's annoying.

Ok, but I now want to get the saddle off the back seat. And its locked. And I need 2 hands.
If I've understood correctly, the car is designed for "not ready" mode to be used instead of truly "off". "Not ready" mode occurs whenever the driver's seat is empty; and as you know, "ready" mode can only be triggered by sitting in the driver's seat and pressing the brake.

So my question is: what does "off" mode provide that "not ready" mode doesn't?

If it's about radio/music: there's a mute button on the steering wheel. If it's about security: exiting "off" mode is (IIRC) the same as exiting "not ready", namely sit down and press the brake.

If you're worried about someone driving off while you're unloading the car, "off" mode isn't going to make any difference here at all. As far as I'm aware, It offers no additional security over "not ready" mode.

Off mode would stop the car lighting up the house across the road like I’m hosting my very own personal lighthouse. Or are you going to say people need to turn off their lights manually too? What about the DRL’s, can’t do that at all.

Agreed; I'd like to be able to do that!

But the original post talks about turning the car off while unloading. I'm assuming that keeping all the lights on while unloading is less of an issue?

It is when your drive points upwards straight into the neighbours windows like mine. The point is that this is basically functionality that almost every car has (for a reason) that MG’s penny pinching has made life unnecessarily more difficult for zero benefit to the customer.

I'd lay a bet. (And I think me money would be safe). If a manufacturer made a "perfect" car, that addressed every single "problem" mentioned on this forum. And of course other forum's. So it was literally spot on. Someone would find summut wrong, somewhere. 🙂👍
Yeah, like they don't do it in Volcano Orange.

Fair enough.

This could be solved relatively easily by MG putting an "off" button on the main screen. Perhaps they could put it next to the "Load driver 1 preferences" button that many of us would also like to see...

Yep, or possibly a double press of the P button in quick succession, or holding down P button

What I find annoying is I've got so used to the MG4 routine of just getting out and locking it to turn it off, that when I move SWMBO's MG5, get out and lock it, it beeps at me to say I haven't turned it off.

Even the lock/unlock torture routine does not truly switch it off. Just the act of unlocking switches on all sorts of systems. If I want to fetch something out of the car, unlock, then my phone starts going mad connecting to the car starting android auto, launching Google maps in the car (I have a wireless adapter), discounting the phone from the home WiFi. And it stays like that for 10 minutes after I re-lock.

An on/off button would be ideal, with it automatically going off if locked in the on state.

I understand that there are even people who don't like Volcano Orange! 😉

I know of the menu access, last tab (I don't recall what that is) and then 'turn off'
I did a quick scan of the replies, and it looks like no one has mentioned that on later versions of the software you can also drag down from the top of the screen and hit the off button.

I don't know if it's just me or my car, but half the time it turns back on as I shift my weight to get out off the car 🙄
