MG4 (2022-2025)
Ive been doing some research on mg4 reliability, looking at DVLA SORN rates compared against the Tesla model 3 based on cars first registered on 2022 and later.

[ Edit moderator: SORN stands for Statutory Off Road Notification, applying to the UK. ]

MG4 has a SORN rate of 0.25% compared to 0.21% for Tesla. to me this confirms that the MG4 is almost as reliable as the Tesla model 3 or remains economic to keep on the road.

I have no faith in media run reliability surveys and believe this confirms the issue are prominently niggles and poor MG experiences.

what do you think

I'm trying to figure out how a SORN percentage can determine a vehicle's reliability, please help me out?
its hard to find any dependable data other than official dvla data. i assumed non-sorn means its still economic to be still driving and on the roads

Can't see any MG4s being Sorn for uneconomic reasons. They are too new, only came out in 2022.

i figure newish cars would only be SORN if written off or not economic to repair?
🙅‍♀️ not in my case. Driver may be on long holiday or working abroad for > 1 month. Might want to change month of taxation. May only drive their Cyberster in the Summer 😎

interestingly SORN rate for Volkswagen golf is 0.52%, ford puma 0.46%, KIA sportage 0.53% (random ICE samples)

some of the most popular ICE cars in UK
MG4 at 0.25% not looking so bad

(i have amended these figures to those registered from 2022)

They end up in the write off register over here because either no one wants to fix the minor problems, or the time it would take to get it repaired is not satisfactory to the insurance companies client, a rental car for that period would be far too expensive, so they simply write a perfectly good repairable car off to never be registered again for such a stupid reason.
In NSW, any EV involved in an accident that requires a tow truck, is an immediate write off ..... it isn't helping the insurance costs at all ...

SORN has nothing to do with a cars reliability. Unsuitable proxy for reliability.
Reliability is maybe the wrong word, true. Maybe repairable would be better word. I wonder why the ICE cars are double the BEVs SORN ratio?

I'd assume write off ratio would be similar maybe higher for BEVs but the SORN ratio is half

Might be the lower purchase price is then reflected in a low resale price, so it doesn't take much before it's not worth fixing .....

If there are, say, 10x as many ICE cars vs BEV cars, then there is a greater probability of an ICE car getting SORN than a BEV simply because there are so many more ICE cars. :)

(I know you're talking ratios, but my point still stands. If there were as many BEVs as ICE cars then their SORN ratios would probably be similar).

I've heard similar stories. Mad if that is the way of it. But I've also heard that many modern card not just BEVs suffer the same due to lack of available spares.

You are comparing apple and pears. We have no idea why cars are sorned as the owner doesn't need to provide this information.

MG's presumably have a lot of older people driving them so they could be more likely for the owners to be in long term situations where they cannot use their car and maybe chose to SORN. However, those owners potentially could be offset by business owners, or any other type of owner.

Who knows, the point is SORN data is irrelevant to how reliable a car is. Plenty of people here will have cars that are basket cases, but they aren't sorning them.

I don't follow this logic. Pro rata they would surly be similar % SORN regardless of their numbers. Granted very small numbers may have freek swings. Interesting that there are 169k MG4s registered in UK and not SORNed since 2022. 100k model 3 and 163k Golfs.

I can't really explain it any differently ... it's about scale. The larger the sample size, the greater the probability of something occurring. Pro-rating doesn't apply linearly vs sample size. 🤷‍♂️
