MG4
Hi, OK new here but looking for some advice. I have a MG4 Trophy Long Range. its United Kingdom Reg is September 2025. The Entertainment System is version:
SWI133-29176-1300R30
1. First off I assume the System is up to date as the car is new?
2. Does anyone know where I can get a booklet describing the screens and functions of the Infotainment System as the on line manual is very discreet with next to no explanantions?

3. Finally onto the problem. The car fails to recognise speed signs. When I drive it stays on 30mph. Annoyingly it beeps as I exceed the 30mph and will not go faster as I depress the accelarator pedal until I press the little button on steering wheel. I am quite frustrated. Also the settings on the Infotainment screen seem to randomly reset some of the time but not always. I have attached some pictures of the Infotainment screens, not sure why but they are attached.

In conclusion the car is great to drive but the software is poor and just not intuitive. Didnt someone sit down and say 'what do people who drive the MG4 want'? We do not want to reset basics before a drive or have to hunt through a jungle of options. I just want a car that advises the speed for the road I am on with maybe a slight bleep when that spped is exceeded and more importantly a visual warning. What would also be really good is a traffic camera warning that does not require the sat nav to on the main screen.

Any help appreciated, thanks

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new car.

Dangerous assumption for an MG4 to think the software will be up to date just because it’s new, unfortunately.

The speed sign recognition is very poor indeed, but unless you are using the “smart” limiter function I don’t think it should limit your speed.

Certain settings reset to their default when the car enters Ready mode, this is a requirement to receive the full 5 stars from NCAP.

Welcome to the forum.

Please look at the Wiki for this forum. In there you will see a guide to the Trophy written by a poster. (MG4 Trophy Owner's Guide.)

Your infotainment system is out of date and should have been updated. See the software update thread.

NCAP rules mean that certain driver aids must be switched on or switched off prior to driving

The speed limitations may be because of 2 options. But, first with the driver's display - press the right-hand steering wheel button that looks like a MS windows folder collection. That will offer you options on the driver's display. Toggle the right-hand toggle right/left then up/down to see the options, one of which is a speed limiter. After selecting it with a press on the toggle you can set a speed. Press the folder button to exit.

Alternatively speed control can be applied through the cruise control settings activated by the lefthand steering wheel (looks like a steering wheel button) or by selecting intelligent speed control based on detected speed signs. Tap the car icon to access MG Pilot and use the tabs, scroll to see the options.

If your car is new and is on R30 then it really must be old stock.

MG is not unique in trying to reinvent the wheel with the switch from ICE to electric cars and every manufacturer has had issues when trying to be "innovative". The issue is they have historically been mechanical and not software engineers so it's as new to them as it is to the owners.

You may find the Jerry Pan and Cars Youtube channel the best place for seeing how things work, he has a pretty comprehensive set of MG4 how to guides.

Is there any way in the UK you can find when a car arrived?
For the avoidance of doubt, the post to which you've replied was misinformed regarding the status/age of the car in question - R30 on the SWI133 branch is not really old.

As to gauging the actual age of a car ... mine came with a clear plastic wallet in the glovebox, and there was a Certificate of Conformity inside which stated the build date. Alternatively, the parcel shelf typically has a label on it (underneath, near the hinge point) which has a manufacture date on it ... as the cars are generally built using the Just In Time principle then it is probable that the build date of the car will be within 2 weeks of the parcel shelf's date. :)

Having got to this point, and thank you all for the advice & info, but can anyone give a point by point guide to setting the car so that it recognises the speed signs….at least it would save me not understanding the you tube vids by Jerry!

In sorry I was wrong about your version number so before I answer can you please say what you want out of recognising speed signs. Note that my 2023 MG4 Trophy is not very good at this, often detecting 20mph signs from side roads as you drive on the main 30mph. There is a setting in MG Pilot that allows you to switch this on and off.

Thank you for the advice I will look into the ‘No speed sign…’ and probably go to Jerry. It seems finally I will switch the whole lot off and revert to driving a decade or more ago.
My Vauxhall Mokka has speed sign recognition and it works perfectly so unfortunately the MG4 is a bit behind the times and the Chinese maybe need to up their game!
