MG5 EV Range is Very Exaggerated

I had a trip to the coast in late September when I got my Mg5 lr
144 mile round trip
70% on motorways

Outside ten 16oC
Outward bound journey at 60mph
Eco mode kers 3
Air con on
Average 3.8kwh
72 miles on 31% of battery

Outside ten 19oC
Return journey at 70 mph
Eco mode kers 3
Air con on
Averaged 3.7kwh
72 miles on 37% battery
I was pretty chuffed with that

Great story Arch, I remember my Dads Minors' first one was the grey which I "nicked" to take my mate and I on a jolly unfortunately I ditched it on a narrow road but a friendly farmer dragged it out on to the tarmac so no harm his 2nd was the minor traveller again in grey with real wood ! I can remember a gallon way back was 2 shillings and 9 old pennies !!! now I don't pay for fuel ...
What surprised me was you towed a caravan! with the minor did it not have about a 9hp engine ??
anyway my delivery is Mid March but the ZS will do till then, we must meet up for a coffee and show me your 5 (before the snow comes) !

Our Minor ran a few more horses than that I think - except when the crankshaft snapped obliquely in the centre main bearing - I ran it like that for a few weeks til I could find a new shaft for dirt cheap ?
Always fancied a diesel in the Minor but I’ve seen sense - now I fancy an electric one ??

We did that same trip 51 years ago in our 1959 Morris Minor on our honeymoon. We were getting about 30 miles per gallon with around 6 of those gallons for a pound. It was a MUCH slower journey then of course and we never did make it all the way in to Mallaig as the wee steep hill then up out of Arisaig (?) stopped poor Morris in her tracks - first gear, full revs and completely stationary - should have changed that stupid clutch !! However, undaunted, we unhitched ( oh yeah - forgot to mention we had pinched my parents caravan ), turned around , and set up camp elsewhere, nearer Loch Morar I think it was.
we didn’t need the MG5 then - we were young, in love and there were no chargers around - but we could get a towbar !! ?

My first car was a 1957 (995cc ?) moggie with the flag indicators (which didn't work). Had a similar experience trying to get to the Cairngorm ski lift, the car just got slower and slower until it just wouldn't go any further up the hill, poor thing. I paid £10 for it from a guy I worked with and it was my pride and joy.

We did a trip a couple of weeks ago to Glencoe for a couple of days inc an onward extra “jolly” to Mallaig. All in we covered around 320 to 330 miles. On arrival at Glencoe the GOM was reading around 150 - about the ZS starting figure. View attachment 5708We topped up a couple of times just for peace of mind with this fifteen minuter at Ballachulish being set in glorious scenery on a very fine day.

Love the red, and the front end looks like a real car, unlike the facelift I'm waiting for?

I think it is interesting how most of you are focussing on miles per KW hr.
I have done 1000 miles in my SR MG5 cost £80 including a few rapid charges away from home. My previous car, Jaguar xj6 4.0 ltr would have cost £375 in petrol for the same mileage. I don’t really care if I am getting less than manufacturer stated claims as I am saving large sums the more miles I do in this very enjoyable to drive, comfortable car. I do drive with heating and sat nav on most of the time and don’t worry about speed but do keep within limits. Great car, so far so good.

I've done just under 10k miles in my MG5 SR and it's cost me about £100. That would have cost me about £1200 in my old diesel.

I did once hear about ICE cars that ran on something other than petrol but I forget what the stuff was called. It produced lots of black soot if I remember correctly

Hi, I've done 1000 miles in my new MG5 EV and I love it, that said I'm comig from a clapped out 307. What I am annoyed at however, is the exaggeration over range. The range mileage and my SatNav have very different opinions. It is no exaggeration to say that the MG range in miles is much closer to KM. I'm not a particularly fast driver, keeping to within 10% of limits and not accelerating quickly. And even when in Eco mode with full KERS, it is shockingly bad. Tonight I had 142miles of range in ECO mide for a100 mile journey. Easy, right?! I got to where strange and distance remaining were both 18 miles, and had to get a charge. And from my 1000 miles experience that is about the size of it. Range is closer to KM than miles. Disappointing but a lovely car. I bought it for the 200 mile range but it's closer to 150. Shame and I feel cheated.

Interested in others experiences.

I have done nearly 5000 miles in my short range MG5 and have achieved an average of 4 miles per kwh. This was a 50/50 mix of driving but warmer conditions than we are seeing right now. I usually stay around 65mph on motorways. I have found the stated range to be pretty accurate so far but lets see how it performs now we are getting the cold days. I hope things improve for you.

Other than relative for a current car's performance, MPG never really made much sense to me either - especially as petrol / diesel are priced in litres. I always used to work it back to pence per mile (and watch that slowly increase). That's the figure that actually impacts me.

With the scenic (1.6D) I could get down to maybe 12p per mile on a good steady (60-65Mph) motorway run. probably 14p+ when the missus is doing the school runs.

Even if I charged the '5 at my peak rate, allowed for the 10% charging loss, left it in sport mode and drove it like a complete bellend I would still struggle to get my fuel costs over 10p/mile. As it is, I'm on the 4.5p (3 hours) Octopus Go Faster, and so far that's working out at less than 2p/mile for the electric. and that includes a camping trip with a car full of gear, a roofbox on the top and a (mostly motorway at 60) 170 mile drive,

I haven't seen much more than 3.5m/KwH for a full trip yet, but then I got the car on September 1st so it hasn't seen a nice warm dry summer's day yet...

I don’t cover many miles, I’ve only done 200 in the three weeks since I got my MG5 SR, but I’m finding the predicted miles/ percentage left is going down in line with the stated range. I drive in Eco mode and KERS 3 and seem to get about 2 miles for 1% of battery, so for a range of around 200 miles that seems right and gives an average of 3.2m/kw . I just drive like I would in an ICE car and I use the air con, heater and radio/satnav. The only time I’ve seen a real dent in the range was testing it on the motorway in Sport mode at 70mph, but I find Eco mode zippy enough even on the motorway!

That's a much more meaningful perspective
Although it's baselined at 4 miles/kWh, you can see that even at 3 miles/kWh you are still looking at over 124 MPGe so the decimal point drops you get by using heating or air conditioning become insignificant.

My 320d used to get 25mpg around town, so i guess my MG5 feels twice as economical than it should.
