Hi,

I got my MG4 Trophy Long Range in September 2024. After just over 1 year, I am rather happy with the car but there are issues that frustrate me.

I won't say much about the infotainment screen, many posts already described the main problems. I will just emphasize that having to control the AC through a touch screen should be illegal and I hope the authorities quickly take action on this.

The issues that I did not see mentionned are:
  • the rear camera image: sometimes when driving in reverse, the image of the rear camera is very dark (not the screen itself, just the image from the camera), sometimes it's even all blue... If I poke the camera, it can solve the problem but it's not a solution.
  • If I manually turn off my headlights and forgot to turn them off when I leave the car, they stay on and there is no warning. When I get back to my car and open the door, then it shows the warning that my lights are still on.

I had my car serviced few weeks ago and they could not offer any solution.

The last thing that trouble me is that I have no idea how to fully turn off the car! If I leave the car and lock it, when I get back, sometimes after 15 minutes, it's like the car was just snoozing. The system reactivates in just few seconds, unlike 30 seconds at least when getting in my car for the first time in the morning. Even the metrics under current journey do not reset. What's the advantage of not turning off the car if it does not know for how long I will be away?

If you have any advice I'm all ears!

Your profile says you have an HS PHEV. I assume your MG4 replaces that car.

Reference your issues:

a. The camera colour change / your fix has all the hallmarks of a faulty connection. The garage should investigate.

b. The lack of lights-on warning is a 'feature' linked to the choice MG made not to have a start/stop button and link locking with powering down. If you power down using the Car/Safety tab on the infotainment screen and then open the door the warning will sound.

As with all computer-based systems the software can decide to do housekeeping after use. I have no idea what it does nor do I know what my laptop is doing when I tell it to shutdown and Windows tells me to 'please wait'. However I believe the car is locked/alarmed after I lock it and that is the most important aspect to me.

I do not often worry about the current journey information but if it is important and the data is not reset you can do that from the right-hand steering wheel buttons.

HVAC ... after the last lot of updates I got (1100R38 Info for the SE, plus and HVAC module update) I find that I never need to touch the HVAC controls; I just set it to 21°C and Auto fan/vent control and the car seems to work well at keeping the cabin comfortable.

Headlights ... I just use auto lights and it works well 99% of the time.

I've just updated my profile. Now it maches my current car.

My entertainment system version is 1300R59.

I wish I could let the car decides what's the best temperature and when to turn on the lights but just no.

I've found that the current journey reading takes a while to reset. I can stop for 40 minutes or so on a journey and it hasn't reset when I start off again. I actually don't mind that as on a long trip I know how far along I am. It does eventually reset when stopped for long enough, but I don't know how long.

I don't use the screen for adjusting temperature or fan, I always use the rh joystick which I find much easier and safer than using the screen.

It does sound like it could be a connection problem with your rear camera. Mine never does what yours does.

As others have said, camera being blue seems like the connection is loose. Should be an easy fix.

Lack of buttons is a poor design, but saving costs in switch gear makes the car as cheap as it is, so that’s the trade off. Like Salty I use the joystick and find that quite easy to use. Leaning out of my seat to set the heated seat/wheel is a bit annoying though.

Trip computers on different cars reset after different periods of times. Had other cars that retain the trip info for an hour after stopping.

Locking the car with the key turns it off. It’s actually a good thing imo as people that leave cars to lock themselves without using the key don’t actually deadlock it - makes it very easy to break in if not deadlocked. Just spam the lock button on exit to be double sure that the car has turned off.

My issue with the AC is that the temperature is never right - constantly flicking between 22-27 degrees. Just as it seems right, it gradually gets too warm/too cold and have to change temp again. Auto/eco, manual fan speed or not, just can’t get it right.
