Hello everyone,

I had my MG HS PHEV up on the ramp yesterday for MOT and we noticed a trace of fluid around the area shown in the attached picture. At first we thought it might be brake fluid, but the brake fluid reservoir is full and there’s no obvious leakage from the brake hoses, fittings, or caliper.

The mechanic cleaned the area with blue roll and advised me to bring it back after a short drive to see if the fluid returns. He wasn’t able to confirm whether the fluid might be residual from servicing, or if it’s leaking from a component in that area.

I’m trying to understand what part this is and what the likely source of the fluid could be. The car was serviced by MG before I got it, and I’ve barely driven it since, so it’s a bit confusing why I’m seeing this.

Has anyone experienced something similar?
Could this be shock absorber (strut) oil working its way down, or something else common on these models?

Second question:
Is there any way to stop the radio/music from automatically turning on every time I start the car? It’s really annoying — I prefer the audio system to stay off unless I choose to turn it on.

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Is this front on right side as you said looked at brake servo but this could be the rear washer pipe, this runs through the bulkhead and there is a rubber pipe which fits on to a steel tube. So having some one to operate the front and rear washer look to left side of the servo and if I remember correctly the brake pipe to the left of the servo you should see the pipe at the back on the bulkhead. As some to operate the washers and you will see or hear the water run out of the pipe and see it on the floor.
To repair this is not easy my car had to go in and the technician add pipe to stop this coming off.

Thanks for the input — I’ll double-check the rear washer line just to rule it out, but the fluid didn’t behave like screenwash. It was definitely oily / greasy rather than watery, and it required brake cleaner to remove it. The brake reservoir level hasn’t changed either.

I am just wondering if it was the drip while they did servicing of the car. Neither me or the MOT guy could have thought where the oil could come from to this part. Silver sqaue box shape which had QR code on it and also the black small box shape part atatched to silver one.

So I’m trying to decide:
  • Should I contact the dealer and ask them to look at this under their sale warranty? they are 250miles away
  • Or should I drive it for a week or two and then have it re-checked locally to see if the fluid returns/spreads?
  • Or is this something common that others have had which points to a specific part?
Any advice on how to proceed would be really helpful.
Thanks again everyone.

Re your 2nd question, depending on the model and year of your car if you hold down the home key below the centre screen for 5 seconds or more it turns off the music and turns the centre screen into a clock. Failing that the only other option is to turn the volume down to 0.

@Jto, you asked if I got it in Yorkshire — no, I didn’t. It was from MG Keighley (Cross Hills).

I honestly can’t believe it was actually dripping. The sales guy was really nice and told me the car had a full inspection and service, and they even replaced one of the tyres. So if I see it dripping again, that would be pretty bizarre.
