No 80% charge limit

The point of a battery is to use it, not to maintain the health for as long as possible.
(y) yes, use it... just don't abuse it, esp. not too fast rate of charge when cold or too hot - even more so when SOC is high.

And if you don't use it, calendar ageing will degrade it anyway ;)

NMC batteries supposedly have a minimum of 2000+ cycles, and LFC battery 3000-4000+.
At 298 miles (WLTP, more practically 250 miles) per cycle, at 500,000 miles I think my car is likely to be in EV heaven long before the battery fails due to too many high charges.

Sure, if you're not using it for weeks at a time leave it at 50% but if used most days I don't think I'd worry too much about keeping the charge up. Also, I think the more recent figure used is 90% rather than 80%.

Personally I usually charge overnight when it drops below 40% and top it up to about 90%, unless I'm using it next day for a longish journey, in which case I set it to 100%. I'm not saying that's what anyone else should do (do whatever you think is best for you), just throwing my 2p worth in there.

Hi. I own a MGS5 in Singapore. I can’t seem to find the charging limit on the touch screen. Our version of iSmart app do not have it too.

Will appreciate if you describe to get to that in the touch screen

Thanks
Hi! For Singapore, the batteries are LFP. So our versions dont have that much of a sensitivity to charging to a 100%. Thus, i guess the app version in our region removed that capability.

It isn't possible to set a charge limit lower than the current charge level. So try to set your 80% level when remaining power is lower than that.

I'm wondering if I can't set it below 90% because the current charge level is 88%. That's a minor bug if its the case. Will see what happens in another 25 or so miles.
You have found the reason. Can’t set a charge limit lower than the current charge level.

I’m a new owner of an S5 SE long range. I don’t seem to be able to set a charge limit, and there is no option to do so in the car or on the iOS app. It strikes me as a little odd as my partner has an S5 Trophy and she is able to set hers to 80% no problem! Is this feature locked to the Trophy model?

My MPU version is DS04A_MZS3E_20250328_1014_V, TBOX version 01M9F8U062 and ISA version 2024.Q2.

It's not available on the SE but should be on the LR as it has the same battery type as the Trophy.

No chance for me to set any charge limits no matter how low or high current charge levels are in my MGS5 62 kW Essence (Australian model). There is simply no way for me to adjust anything in the Charging tab. The same applies to the mobile app; No way to adjust it. Can someone please post images on what it is supposed to look like?

For those who say that it doesn’t matter if you charge LFP batteries to 100 %, yes you are right. But that’s not the point for me. I am using one pedal mode and try to avoid charge levels above 95 % for two reasons.
1. Deceleration becomes very unpredictable in my MGS5 in one pedal mode when the charge levels exceed 95 %. At speeds above 40 km/h there is little to no deceleration until the vehicle slows down before it suddenly “kicks in”.
2. Every so often whilst I am driving I receive the alert that regenerative braking is limited due to charge levels. Yes MG, I know that the charge level is too high. I would like to limit the charge to 90 % so that you don’t need to keep reminding me, but by the looks of it you didn’t make this feature available on my vehicle.

What is the point of making a feature like one pedal mode available but then not allowing the user to fully make use of it safely as there is no option to set charge limits?

@Fabolicious

Welcome to the MGEV forums!

I have an Android phone and in the app I can set the maximum battery charge by logging into the app, choosing the option EV Management. On that page, click on the hexagonal doughnut (top right of the screen). On the page that opens is a dropdown for Target Battery Level. Choose your percentage.

You cannot set the charging % on your model's battery type so the only way to stop it going to 100% is by adjusting the length of the charge.

Are you sure that there isn't a little slider on the charge indicator which you can move back and forth to set a maximum? It's not massively obvious, it's a little double headed arrow.
