This was always going to happen. It's Economics 101: the drop in revenue from declining receipts from fuel duty has to be made up from somewhere. The OBR released a report in 2022 about this.
As long as it's broadly revenue neutral (ICEs revenue loss vs EVs gain) I've no argument. And being very rural, this will hit me harder than most: just ferrying my daughter to/from 6th-form college around 18 miles away can have me doing ~250 miles a week. She does catch a bus sometimes, but it's around 6 miles to the nearest bus stop and the bus times are often inconvenient for her schedule; and the return bus drop-off point is sometimes 8 miles or so away. But it will still be cheaper than using the Disco 3 to do the ferrying.

Expect a lot of folk will be looking for pre 2017 diesel cars then with the VED being so low and MPG so high. My wife had a diesel Mini from that time frame, zero VED, Euro 6 emissions and up to 800 miles from £60-£70 in the tank.

This ^

The roads needs to be looked after and it's only fair that every user pays towards it. Actually fairer as high users pay more.

That's all well and good, but NO taxation is ring-fenced for road building/maintenance ... it all just goes into the general pot. IF this per mile taxation comes into force I can guarantee that there will be no discernible improvement in road maintenance.

Nothing stops them from revisiting the fuel duty (which is frozen for a couple of years now) and pump that up too.

Like a lot car modifications like exhausts, lights etc.
Sold for off road use only and everyone ignores the rules, and police won't do anything as long as the MOT's valid for it.

Introducing this crazy hare brained idea will not go down well with the motor trade either I don’t think.
EV’s cost more than there ICE counterparts and therefore it can be a difficult financial decision for people to make the switch, well this has made that decision a lot easier for many.
A total reversal on what they were advocating about ten years ago.
Offering grants and pouring money into improving charging infrastructure to meet the expected demand for eco friendly cars.
It’s nice to see where their priorities truly lie, bugger the emission levels and the environmental implications, we are losing to much money on petrol and road tax !.
They are following the same model that they used when they tried to convince the public to drive oil burners.
Hooked them in and then increase the price of derv through the roof !.
They still have the neck to attend the COP summit, can’t see the point myself.
I clearly remember, that under the Boris government, there was a strong rumour that they intended to pull the plug in grant on EV’s in the budget.
The budget was due the week before the COP summit in Scotland, so this did not seem like a good time to make the announcement.
So, what did they do.
They finished the week in Scotland and then announced removing it the following week.
Absolute hypocrites !.

Totally agree. Which ever the way the Government, dress things up. About anything. And particularly Motorists, coz we are sitting Ducks. It's all about screwing us, for a much as they can. It's really as simple as that. Please don't tell me, anyone thinks otherwise. 🙂👍

Since June, BEV's account for 25% of the market. That means the government are losing 25% of their fuel duty. Maybe they should cut the 25% of the billions in tax relief they give to the oil companies.
