I thinks it's because they are trying to make EVs the more attractive option by offering grants then at the same time adding road tax and now this, it's counter productive.

Don't get me wrong I have no issue with paying my way but VED (road tax) needs completely reformed there is no way knackered old diesels or petrol cars should be paying less VED than an EV.

The £195 a year should be the bottom rate for all cars.

Yes didn't they do the same thing with diesel vehicles made them attractive cheap road tax cheap fuel ,then a few years later put the price off diesel up and then put the road tax up by altering the emissions that a diesel engine could produce, there isn't any cheap road tax for new diesel vehicles anymore . My opinion the 2030 date for petrol diesel vehicles won't happen because the UK is a shit show regarding ev infrastructure, save the planet and all that stuff cut back on plastics etc and no other country is giving a shit .anyway that's enough of me slavering shite

No there isn't any cheap VED for new diesels, and they're probably a lot 'cleaner' than older diesels anyway, but my neighbour has a knackered old 2013 Citroen DS3 which clunks and bangs and belches out smelly smoke like you wouldn't believe, and he only pays £20, how the hell can that be right when I pay 10 times as much for my nice clean quiet EV.

In theory this would be paying for a service, you pay for a certain quality of service, so what minimum levels of service would you expect for your money?

Better quality road surfaces
The ability to travel at the max speed for the road for a majority of the trip
Reduction in other payments that contribute to the same funding pot

You could always buy an overpriced HS2 ticket for part of your journey , from somewhere you did not want to set off from to somewhere you did not want to go! Of course part of that ticket would be tax.

As @MG Clive said I was referring to older diesels that pay well under £100 ved.

Lots of countries are giving a shit, as you put it, I was in various parts of Norway over the summer and the vast majority of cars sold new there are EVs
I have also recently travelled to Iceland and it's a similar story there.

Our countries problem is that we have gave the feckless a career of staying on benefits, mostly at the expense of the middle earners who have worked hard to get what they've got and get penalised at every turn.

Yes I agree but that Citroen DS3 is reliable doesn't have to deal with MG customer service that don't give a shite . Forgetting one big thing how many Hgv EVs on UK roads probably none all diesel throwing out fumes. How many diesel vans millions of them are they getting made obsolete in 2030 the answer is no but they do pay quadruple the tax we do . And let's be honest if we still have an MG that's 20 plus years old it will be a bloody miracle

I totally agree, the problem is that the government switches its stance and priorities with regards to the climate etc as and when it pleases them, to take extra money from drivers !.
Back in day, they introduced emission tests as part of the MOT in order to cut down on pollution figures etc.
At the same time they then realigned the permitted emissions figure and added in more more layers of grading VED for motor vehicles.
On paper this looked like a good idea for the environment and H&S reasons of course and as a bonus, brought in shed loads of extra cash for them.
Then they take the same logical step, by introducing grants / zero VED etc for people who made the expensive switch over to EV's.
All looks good for the planet and printed in the news papers of course.
Now the tact has now shifted ?.
The government have now decided that the emission system of grading VID rates, is clearly not working hard enough to bring in MORE revenue.
Therefore the easy target had to be the EV drivers, who they fooled, like they did with derv drivers a number of years ago.
Hook you in and then absolutely hammer you on VED and Derv costs.
The bottom line is that they WILL continue to keep rejigging the VED rates to raise extra funds, regardless of what they said that was more important, cash is king !.
The environment has been firmly been pushed pushed to the back on the list of importence, thats for sure.
Who said it had to fair anyway ?.
Governments never have and never will play fair.

Most middle earners in any westernised country will argue the same, the US tried to address this as one of their concerns and voted in the Orange Baby . Look how well that's going !
Too many countries are carrying too much unsustainable debt and passing the buck down the line to the next respective government , the next financial crash will be massive and worldwide resulting in power shifts , uncontested land grabs, social unrest everywhere. Pension companies which underpin government debt will not be able to achieve their responsibilities and payments unless they have invested in arms companies with an expanding portfolio and order book.
