It looks like from 2028 EV drivers are going to be paying 3p per mile on top of road tax. They say it's to fill the alleged black hole and to even up the amount EV drivers pay for using the road compared to ICE vehicles.

Once again the government after encouraging drivers to buy one sort of fuelled vehicle they then tax them heavily because their plan worked better than they thought it would. Remember when we were told to buy diesel cars and then they increased the tax on diesel fuel.

Is this another ploy by the fossil fuel companies lobbying the government to keep ICE vehicles on the road and keep their profits up?

That works out at over £500 for the milage I do
So say 16.000 miles a year.
Current fuel duty on fossil fuel is 52.95p/litre plus VAT, total 63.54p/litre or £2.88/gallon. (at 4.54 litres in a gallon)
16,000 miles at 50mpg (let's be generous) is 320 gallons
320 gallons fuel duty is £921.

EV - £500 ICE - £921.

Not as bad as ICE but still hurts.

My Octavia had road tax of £30 and Fabia £0. Now I pay £195 for each on my MG5'S.
One car does less than 5k.
Scrap road tax and just do all vehicles on milage.

At the end of the day, most EV owners will probably still drive an EV because we know they're so much better than ICE in just about every way, but it'll make it harder to get non EV drivers to switch to electric.

Unfortunately I agree. And the Bastards know that. 🤬

It's ironic that the British Prime Minister attended the Earthshot prize in Rio yet his government is not supporting those of us you have decided to change to a greener form of transport.

Was expecting something like this to happen...As more and more EVs are out there government needs to recoup the losses from fuel duty.
It may push people to use their cars less; it will be hard for people in rural areas or like in my case where you need a car for everything....
Hope they will leave it like this and will not introduce anything stupid related to car weight as it was proposed....

At first they might have. And then realised, We are losing money on EVs. No road tax, no fuel duty. So let's put Road Tax on them. Then, hang on where still losing money, let's bring out some, Bollox pay per mile on EVs. 🙄🤪

Your mileage is recorded at each MOT test. That would be the easiest way to do it. And yes, I know that the first 3 years on a new car doesn't have an MOT, but they'll get you at the first MOT and then if you've been under-reporting thet'll hit you with a big bill.
