Whereas many years ago 30 MPG was common for many ICE cars , and through regulations and public pressure many cars now do 45-60 MPG if the manufacturers figures are to be believed . If the average driver is only doing the same yearly mileage then there must be a reduced tax revenue there which could be addressed by , oh ! lets see a PPM tax on ICE vehicles to make up the shortfall, from what they normally would have contributed. After all fairs fair.
That would stop the mass migration back to ICE cars if some of the social media reports are correct and the governments mandate of EV adoption can get back on track. I put it to the house!

If the validation for the EV tax is sharing the cost for road repairs and upgrades, request the figures for the fuel tax collected and the monies allocated for road works ........
When the two figures aren't even close, suggest a reduction in politician pay-pack and perks to reduce the need for additional tax going into general revenue .... or a 10% reduction in the number of paid politicians to give relief on the fuel tax and introduce a PPM across all vehicles and that money goes in an account that is only used for road maintenance ....... it won't get anywhere, but it might shift some of the ICE drivers opinions more toward the EV drivers and put a scare through the pollies for Christmas ....

Back to travelling abroad. As the vehicle has to travel through customs, and as your details are already logged when you enter and leave anyway, they could take a note of the mileage as you leave and return.

That's a good point.

But then customs people have to talk to the DVLA and be trusted by them and have working IT systems connected to either other.... that's usually where cross-government programmes go wrong.

I am sure they could simply pay one of the big outsourcing companies £4bn to produce a barely working system in 5 years time...?

Luckily, our energy bills are dropping £150, which is great.... or is it???

I probably threw too many figures out there earlier, but I’m loosely making the same point in reverse: UK-wide, roughly 80% of EV owners can charge at home, but in London it’s closer to 30% because so many households don’t have off-street parking.

Although surveys do suggest that 85% of people with EVs in the UK have access to off street charging, so I am not sure about some of your numbers.

I think the point to be taken from this is that it is primarily people with access to off street charging that are buying/running EVs.
A PPP charge on top of public charging costs removes all economic incentives to switch to an EV if you haven't got access to off street charging.

Agreed. There's a real risk of EV sales slackening off or even decreasing as a proportion of new cars.

The incentive would be to wait until the last possible minute to get an EV, unless they increase petrol/diesel costs significantly, which is unlikely since it has always been hugely unpopular.

If there's not a strong economic reason to prefer an EV, most people will likely stick with what they know.

Me personally, I just fancied an EV. But had to be a quick one, hence an X Power was a no brainer.
If it does help to save the Planet or I get lower running costs, then great. But for me, they weren't the main reasons.
I will say, though I will never go back to an ICE.

Always wanted to be able to afford to buy an EV, the poverty pack MG4 51 was a great buy and even though we have a drive car, the Prius Gen2, the MG4 has clocked up 11,300kms since Feb and just about all the charging has been solar, so definitely the cheapest vehicle I've ever own as far as fuel costs ....

Not sure if saving the planet came into the decision much, more the ability to drive past a fuel station and just smile, watch the prices go up and down, depending on holiday weekends or just the excess fuel has been used up, so it becomes a sellers market again .....

Yet to see if they get an EV road tax through over here, I think they might get caught out with the claim it is to fund roads, if all the fuel excise went onto road funding ..... we might even have roads smooth enough to feel the XPower vibes

Yes, great point. When I inherited my dad's diesel Golf I was sure there was a fuel leak, because of the smell.... but it turned out to be just how it smells. Now I don't smell it at all because I am used to it.

Over 50 yrs in the automotive and industrial fitting industry, it's gotta smell pretty bad before I can smell anything .... although, we have a chihuahua named Coco that lets me know I can still smell if the sent is strong enough ..... the cheeky bugga just lays there and licks his lips ..... reckons they are strong enough to taste .... and he isn't far wrong either

For me I wanted to see what the fuss was about, I wanted a quiet car, attracted by low running costs and using some of my solar excess. As for saving the planet, I think the planet will get on fine once the next mass extinction (humans) happens, so the best way to expedite that is to burn as much fossil fuel as quickly as possible.
