HI,

We have a 2022 ZS EV LR.

Yesterday we tried to charge at a site on the Woolpit Interchange off the A14. Half a dozen CCS charge points. When we arrived, we discovered that the plugs on the charging cables (not the chargepoints themselves) were branded "Tesla", and the instructions led on details for Tesla drivers. But they included details for non-Tesla vehicles. There were two non-Tesla vehicles already charging - a Merc and an Openreach van.

However, the CCS plug was short of pins in the circular part (I think there were only two). When we tried to use a chargepoint, up came a message "unsupported vehicle" on our dashboard. Tried another point, same result. I've subsequently seen that Zapmap says it is a Tesla public supercharger location, but there was no branding to that effect obviously visible on site.

Although I've never done it, I had understood that our car could now be charged from Tesla chargers. I'm sure there are threads here from people who've done it. And the site was clearly not Tesla-only. Am I missing something? Do we need an adapter, or do we need to register somewhere? Or a software update? It would be useful for future reference.

Thanks

You may need the Tesla App. In Oz, we can join get a monthly Tesla Membership that gives 20c kWh discount.
I recently did a Brisbane - Sydney- Brisbane on our MG ZS EV charging at 9 Tesla Superchargers.
I used the Tesla app. Once you have set the App up, all you have to do is plug in, identify the charger in the app and start charging. Stop, unplug and go. Payment is via the credit card via the app

The original 2022 ZSEV was not compatible with Tesla superchargers., or at least mine was not. You could pay for a software update (some MG dealers did it for free) to make the ZSEV compatible. Perhaps you need this update?
I now have the S5 which is 100% compatible with the anycar Tesla superchargers and charges like a dream.

I had a similar issue with my MG5 SR. It needs about £1000 to fit a new module. I gave it to my wife and bought a 2022 LR, works a treat on open to all Superchargers

I have a 2022 ZS LR also, and my local MG dealer wanted to charge me for the Tesla update, even when I was already paying for a service. I had the nexr service done 30 miles away in Bath and they did it for free.

My advice , , , contact dealers within your local area and ask if they do the update for free. (Bath were also cheaper than my local, money grabbing dealer, and did a low mileage service because it was under the mileage in the log book).

Eventually had mine enabled to use Tesla charging. Car (ZS LR) charged at 35kW using a Tesla charger at Bristol. Garage gave no explanation why rate so slow on a Supercharger. Car had just driven 84 miles.

Thanks all. I had no idea there was a software update involved. I've rung the local dealers. One said it was an external patch (i.e. non-MG) and wanted £200. No idea about VAT. The other didn't mention thesource, but said their hourly rate was £125+VAT, and had no idea how long it would take.

Not interested at that price point. Or even close. Ho hum. Plan better in future.

Maybe get it done with a service, that's what I did, or come and spend a day as a tourist in Bath (again, that's what I did )

What was the starting SoC and did you preheat the battery ?

The Charge "speed" is dependent on what SoC the battery is at and the battery temperature.

If the battery was "cold" that could definitely do it.

Back in 2022 when we had our first, we charged at other chargers but in summer when the battery was nice and toasty and the SoC was low, i had it peak just above 90KW

Many dealers will do the update or 'enhancement' for free with a service or just charge you £50 to do it. Shop around. The update is actually free from MG but it's the labour time some dealers charge for. You also should really put the Tesla app on your phone as it works well if you use that. There are small payment screens for contactless cards now appearing on many of the new Tesla chargers that also work well. Get the update from MG first. Mine charges fine at any open to all Tesla site & it's so cheap!

I paid £100 for the MG Tesla charging fix. Long trips are now so much better. The 'open to all' Tesla chargers are cheaper than the competition, much more reliable and as quick as my car can cope with. And the Tesla app takes the stress out of paying and planning.

Certainly a cold day 0 degrees having the heating on for the 80 mile journey had dragged the battery SoC from 100% to 49% from memory, maybe lower. Return journey needed heat and lights hence the top-up. I will buy heated seat covers for next winter, heater uses to much power.

Will test Charge speed again soon.

I have a 2022 mg5 lr. How do I tell if it is tesla compatible

Do you not have heated seats in yours? The long range has them as standard normally. They use significantly less energy that the cars heating system.

Download the Tesla app add your car as other other then search for a local Supercharger. You only have to add a few kW to see if it works
