Range prediction - if only

No one noticed the 14 mph average ..... I've never tried to drive that far at an average of 14 mph, so I'm not going to say it's not possible for an MG4 51 to achieve .... but I'm certain I couldn't do it

The trouble is, that's meaningless. If the car is stationary but turned on, it counts that time in its calculation.

So the average speed is more or less meaningless than the guessometer?
The only value I've seen in the guessometer, is the numbers go up when in regen going down the long hill into Adelaide .... the SOC doesn't go up .....

On the return trip, the guessometer really drops like a stone climbing big hill, giving the driver the feeling it won't make it much further, that was the effect it had on the sales person who had it as their demo drive car for a few weeks before we bought it, he turned around and drove back across the city to get another vehicle for his drive to Murray Bridge, 74kms away .....
Once it clears the first hill, all the guessometer distance returns ... plus a bit ..... but it was great value when it won me a bet (for a meal of my choice) we would make it home with range to spare, rather than driving into Mt Barker to a charging station ;)

If it was doing that, it would be telling you 218 miles.
It somehow gets very optimistic when it resets, I think my car shows something ridiculous like 485km even though the WLTP is 435km. I think the standard used in China is CLTC which is known to be much more optimistic than WLTP. Again this is just thinking out loud, I don’t have any proof for this.

You need to learn to understand what the GOM really means. I used to watch the GOM on my old Golf a lot, so that helped.

You should see the nonsense it displays after the car hasn't moved for 48 hours, having been switched on for over 30 of these hours (me sleeping in the car). A couple of times I reset it all in sheer self defence.

Interesting to see real world range tests.

Not a new video, but 12 cars driven in reasonably average conditions for the UK (raining and about 11 degrees C) and at various speeds to simulate town/motorway driving.

MG4 fared reasonably well, Trophy ER managed 227miles (70% of it's claimed maximum) and 80 miles more than a Lexus costing more than twice the price !!

Also interesting was the fact its claimed efficiency taken from the car was its actual efficiency 3.1m/kw

I actually managed 328 on our ER in June going from Stafford to Heathrow and back, mostly motorway. Had 3% left as I turned onto the drive. I was determined not to top-up charge on the return to see if it was capable.

3%? You have balls of steel - and my admiration !! (y)

One day I'll take our MG down to zero, just to see what happens, I'll have to take an inverter and battery in the back to get me home, or at least to a charging station, but there might be some left on the table like Tesla do ......
It would be interesting to see what the GOM predicted after a major reset like that .....

That screenshot I posted earlier remided me of a question I have been meaning to ask.

That 145-mile journey was from home to Fort William, and I started on 100%. I don't remember what the SoC was reading when I got to the charger. The average speed for the journey is given as 31 mph, but that was very much a game of two halves. The first 50 miles, to Stirling, is mostly motorway and I was probably tanking it. Beyond Stirling is relatively slow single-carriageway A roads, and by the time I was getting out of Tyndrum and across Rannoch moor the traffic was pretty slow.

My question is, how many miles back does the GOM estimate the current range? I thought it might be for the whole journey, or even the whole time since the last charge, but I suspect not, from this. I think that 237 miles, which I would never see in my wildest dreams, was based on just the latter part of the drive when I was going slowly enough to drag an average speed that was probably around 60 mph (for the first 50 miles) down to 31 mph.

Anyone know the answer to this?

It must make its guess from the current load ...... must be the new hair cut that has upped my pun level ......

The 7.5km run the Adelaide Hills to the end of the South Eastern Freeway, will add around 15km to the GOM if the brakes are not applied, yet consume up to 70km on the climb back up .... but that returns once the big hill is over and the up and down hills aren't as long or severe ...... and yes, you look cool in the sunnies ;)

From memory the usage tab (one of the tabs in the charge screen) shows the usage graph for the last 50 km, so maybe that’s all the GOM calculates with?

It’s still strange it gets optimistic when the total accumulated total resets, because you’d think it would still have access to the last 50km of data then. So maybe it doesn’t use that data at all…

Being new to all this EV stuff i had to Google what 'GOM' is :) resulting in finding...

"It is based on factors like past driving history, current conditions, and algorithms, and can be affected by driving style, temperature, and energy consumption"

Although it doesn't say how far back the history goes...

4.2 mls/KWH is pretty darned good @Rolfe ! I've only managed that once sitting at 50MPH on the motorway. I suspect you got stuck behind my Waitrose wagon at 40mph from your house to the Edinburgh ring road... (I normally do that route twice a week)

I suspect that this reset is like a master reset, so overrules the last 50 km/miles metric. 🤷‍♂️

I don't remember getting stuck behind a lorry on the A702 that day but honestly, I drive it so often they all blur into one. But (as it was my drive to work for 12 years) I'm pretty slick at overtaking on it, so probably not. I may be the blur you sometimes see going past you. In contrast the drive from Doune to An Gearasdan was slow.

Looking at the time, four and a half hours to do less than 150 miles, with most of the first 50 miles at motorway speeds, I must have been crawling for the last part. I'm surprised I didn't die of boredom. Nice scenery though.

(Actually I have probably been behind your Waitrose lorry on numerous occasions. I remember when I started to drive that road in 2006 when I began to work at the Bush, a Waitrose lorry was one of the things I encountered regularly. Also a thing with the logo "Big Green Parcel Machine".)
