Reduction Box Oil

The honest truth is I wouldn't trust them to do it a "second" time either, especially as I am pissing them off big time by pursuing my complaint. I have asked if there is CCTV. They say they have video but not of sufficient quality to help. What good is CCTV in that case? They are working from the Oxford Book of Cop Outs each time I ask for some form of evidence and slowly working themselves into a corner as I have now threatened to escalate it to the MD of Pentons.

Yes I know. So they are currently offering to do it "again" for free to regain my trust (yeah, like that's going to happen!), but "favouring" me by doing so as they are claiming that it was done. I haven't coverered all avenues yet, but if I do end up doing it myself, I will (probably) be able to ascertain that it was or wasn't done. If it looks like it was done I'll go and apologise (cos that's the kind of guy I am :-) ). If it looks like it wasn't I'll take a sample down to the garage stick it under the service managers nose and tell him what I think of him :-)

I understand. Yes you will be probably be able ascertain whether it was done or not, but with no independent witnesses or verification, then you showing them a bit of oil is no more than them telling you they did it. In their view they won't know where you got that bit of oil from.
It will satisfy your need but nothing else.
I don't want to be negative but other than satisfying yourself I'm not sure what you would achieve. Perhaps pay for an independent check would prove something. 🤷‍♂️
 
I did mine last week, I posted it on another thread, it was dirty and it had metal on the plug. Now my MG5 has a full service history and the 4th and 5th service were done elsewhere and last year! So looking at my oil it hasn't been done! I trust my current dealer but I own a garage so why would I pay for someone else doing the service on my car? Likewise I am going to rustproof the car as at 3 years old it needs it before it starts going rusty

I did mine last week, I posted it on another thread, it was dirty and it had metal on the plug. Now my MG5 has a full service history and the 4th and 5th service were done elsewhere and last year! So looking at my oil it hasn't been done! I trust my current dealer but I own a garage so why would I pay for someone else doing the service on my car? Likewise I am going to rustproof the car as at 3 years old it needs it before it starts going rusty
Out of interest, what rustproofing will you use?

Just black waxoil, I will clean any rust and treat with rust killer and we have some great stuff for the sills which are in primer it's used for truck beds ver hard wearing. I will drop all covers and arch guards might as well do it right

Sorry to hear that Peterboat, but not in the slightest surprised. I have just, today, finally resolved my position with the main dealer. I decided to postpone doing the job myself for the same reasons that Gomev pointed out above. The existing oil condition was my ultimate evidential backstop (or should I say blackslop :-). I persevered with customer services to-ing and fro-ing, even giving them suggested options where they could save face. To no avail and in the end they stopped communicating so I started to look at the alternatives, which included submitting a request to the Motor Trade Ombudsman (which I wasn't very hopeful about the prospects of to be honest). As a last ditch effort I worked out what the MD's business email address was and forwarded the entire email thread (which I'd accumulated with customer services) to him. I obviously guessed his email correctly because three hours later I got a phone call from the service manager apologising that after a "forensic" internal review, they agreed that the oil change had NOT been done and would I bring the vehicle back to have that corrected. Pity they didn't do that a month ago and save me several hours of time and some stress. No written apology, no reply from the MD directly. All brushed neatly under the carpet apart from a verbal apology from the service manager who did have the decency to seem slightly embarrassed. No offer of compensation (e.g.discount voucher). Cheerio and goodbye. To say I'm disappointed in the outfit would be a lie because I've experienced before how these guys operate. "Customer Service". They couldn't give a swinging s**t about customers other than the contents of their wallets. My guess is that there hundreds, if not thousands of MG5s around that haven't had their transmission oil changed. Then again who changes gearbox/diff oils in this day and age. But if you've paid for it they should bl***dy well do it. My personal bet is that they don't do brake fluid changes properly either. They probably suck the old stuff out of the master cylinder and refill with new which takes about 3minutes for a trained operator, leaving the brake pipes and calipers full of the old stuff. If a job needs doing properly........

We have a little bubble on a rear arch and Scott has worked overtime to get it sorted for us, I have a bodyshop next door who can do it but it's warranty so it's getting done. Clearly some are better than others and we have got lucky

What gear oil did you use and where is the drain plug located?

Also, is there a level plug? I assume there is

The filler plug is on the gearbox accessible from under the passenger wing and the drain is at the bottom, I have a ramp so didn't really take much notice. My only advice is make sure the filler plug undoes before draining!

I need the help of the hive mind and maybe @MilesperkWh

I wish to keep my MG5 long term so was hoping to swap the reduction box gear oil now I have covered nearly 4K miles.

The manual states Shell SL2808 and nobody has heard of it...not even my local MG dealer. They said they don't even deal with Shell and would get Fuchs but they didn't seem to know what type so let's hope they find out before the first Taxi needs a change :)

So the question is what grade of oil is required I guess?

Just had mine done this morning. The MG Dealership used ShellSL2808. The bottle was covered In Chinese writing but underneath it clearly showed sl2808. (1litre). I checked with MG Uk ...they said they would only meet future warranty claims on the reduction gear if the oil was done at the 4th service.
