Reduction Box Oil

I did ask MG UK about the oil. The reply I got was so utterly and breathtakingly naieve it deserved a thread all of its own.

Read all abaht it:

Personally I have no issue with anyone wanting to do routine maintenance on their own vehicle. Only concern is if anything goes wrong after you have done your own oil change would MG honour any warranty you may have on the box?

I would hope to get MG to do it.

As you are high mileage it would be worth asking if it is something they will do but I wouldn't be surprised if they said no as it's not a serviceable item.

On traditional transmissions it's a simple job to do but I don't know how easy it is on a EV reduction box. Has anyone actually looked to see how easy it is to access drain/filler plugs etc?

Cleevely do it on LEAFs even though its not on the service list.

The gunk they get out & bits of metal show why.

There was a video on it recently

Cool. The best I can offer is a follow-up from Shell Holland, who say

This product, nor a replacement is directly available in the UK.
Best to go to an MG dealer and ask for the official product

Did you see the reply from MG UK?

Dear xxxxxxx

Thank you for getting in touch with MG motor!

With regards to your query, the MG5 EV model is fully electric, and it does not require any type of oil. (my bold)

Would it be possible to clarify your enquiry in order for us to provide the correct information?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

MG Call Centre Team

Looks like a correction from myself, the oil is made in China? I know it does not help those who want the right to repair.
As I get updates from the the little bird I'll let you all know

Another spanner, why does the MG5 use Sl2808 and the MG ZS use Castrol BOT 351 LV.
Both EV?
The HS uses Castrol BOT 351 LV

FWIW, we had SWMBO's MG5 in for its 4th service (4 years) and they changed the transmission oil.
It's done less than 7k miles, should be good for another 4 years.

Hi. I've just had a 4yr service on a 2021 MG5 EV for the princely sum of just under £300 and transmission oil change was shown as part of the schedule. The problem I have is that I can't be sure they have actually done it. My suspicions arose when the invoice did not itemise the oil. I queried this and after 5mins of fiddling on a PC I was given a modified invoice with the oil now itemised (and the labour reduced to produce the same quoted overall total), and I was assured that the oil had actually been changed. Being a cynical old b@stard I looked at the undertray when I got home and found no indicaion of it's having been removed. No tool marks, finger prints etc, just an unmarked covering of dust including over the fixings. What do I do? Just suck it up (the situation - not the oil) or do I take it further? It would help to know how the fluid is changed as I could possibly remove a small amount and see what it looks like, but even that could be ambiguous.

As a matter of interest, how much oil did they itemise ?

Qty 1. Yes that's right - no units. Also no disposal charge itemised. They did itemise £5 of brake cleaner so I must have some pretty clean brakes, right? They didn't mean brake fluid cos they charge a tenner for that separately (about right in my opinion). I believe the car takes 0.9L of oil from other sources. They also charged me for screen wash although I filled it the day before so it was full. I queried it to no avail. These guys totally lack principles and love to extort money whilst they smirk into your face when you quibble - it's almost impossible to get satisfaction. I am currently still trying to get a sensible reply from them and will happily give the full transcript if anyone is interested!! They are offering to do me a big favour and "redo" the oil change for free in order to "regain trust" with them. Most people would accept that but I have asked for CCTV. They say they have cameras but there is not enough detail!! They have all the answers. The answer they won't have is when I do the job myself and see what comes out. Of course, I'll have to be prepared to apologise if it looks clean :)

Have they charged for disposal too?
No Crispjay, not itemised. See also my reply to Kithmo.

Even though they sound like a bunch of cowboys, if they are going to 'redo' the oil change for free why are you going to do it at your own expense ?

The honest truth is I wouldn't trust them to do it a "second" time either, especially as I am pissing them off big time by pursuing my complaint. I have asked if there is CCTV. They say they have video but not of sufficient quality to help. What good is CCTV in that case? They are working from the Oxford Book of Cop Outs each time I ask for some form of evidence and slowly working themselves into a corner as I have now threatened to escalate it to the MD of Pentons.

Dont muck about, trading standards tell them the story and Im sure they'll investigate.
