It would probably require a decent size of hard drive to store and compress the files on, which means a hardware and firmware upgrade also.

Don't need a hard drive, SD card would do, Tesla and dash cams use an SD card. My duel dash cam works with a tiny 16 Gb card.
To be fair, they WON'T do it, but I think that soon it will be a low-cost 'option' on new cars. then become standard
