Service Reminder

Don't see why you need the car to remind you, of servicing. If you get your car in September 2023 and it needs servicing every 12 months you get it serviced in September 2024, simple's, isn't it?
As said, put the date in your phone. Or even simply marked on a Calendar at home, which you with see every day. Same principle for when your insurance, car tax etc etc is due. It's not rocket science. 🙂👍

I was recently late for a service on my MG5 (purchased in Nov 2024; first serviced in Jan 2026). I didn't get any reminders, which (from this thread) appears to be the usual case. But when I queried the lack of reminder with the dealer, they mentioned a 'service reminder system' being part of the service itself, which I queried.
  • they apologised that they hadn't sent a reminder ("we have seen this with a couple of MG customers with the same issue")
  • they explained that "The Service Reminder System being reset, is us resetting the service reminder in the vehicle itself to ensure it gives you an accurate reminder for its servicing requirements, just in case we can't be there to remind you".
So according to them the vehicle should tell me when a service is due?
And, how do I now check the service history, if I wish to sell the car?

Don't know about the MG5, but in my MG4 it is easy to reset and doing so sets the reminder to 15k miles - it doesn't set a time-based reminder from what I can see. So unless you do at least 15k miles within 12 months then the reminder may still be late anyway. 🤷‍♂️

My car was purchased end of April and needed servicing early November. I didn’t need the alert as I know it’s 15,000 miles, but for the unorganised people, or just the busy people of the world, it’s helpful. You get an alert from the insurance company etc.

Something to be aware of when buying used, I explore everyone to check and confirm the service history is full and up to date, that means every 12 months or 15k miles, whatever comes first. The room for error is 30 days or 1000 miles. Almost all the cars I checked when buying did not have full service history, most were quite a way from this, some had no service history at all in 2-3 years. Not sure if it’s fleets or pcp or what but most all used cars will be out of warranty which (limited nature aside) is crazy seeing as it a major selling point on MGs. I set a calendar reminder a few weeks before it’s due on repeat. On this topic also look at service plans for MG, they usually offer a cheaper one (£115ish) followed by more expensive (£250). I picked up a 24 month deal (services 3 and 4) and it keeps the AA cover too
