Tail gate query

When one of my doors are opened or even ajar, I can’t select D. That’s understandable. but with my tail gate wide open I can select D and drive off. Is this normal operation? Or should it not have allowed me to select D, as it does for the doors? Thanks.

Just guessing here, but I'd assume it's by design as sometimes you may need to drive with a long load sticking out the back with the tail gate ajar. At least the car won't fill with fumes like it does with an ICE vehicle when you do that
