taller tyres on MG5?

Has anyone tried taller tyres on the MG5? I have a FL.

I was wondering about putting all seasons, in a slightly bigger size, perhaps 215/60/r17, 215/55/r17, or even 225/55/r17. The aim would be to improve comfort, and to fill up the arches a little more. The current wheel tyre combo looks a little too low-profile in proportion to the car, in my opinion.

Any thoughts on this - or has anyone tried - and maybe even got photos? I'm guessing that there would be no rubbing issues at these marginal size increases.

Also any thoughts on the best all-season tyres for the money?

Don’t think many would dare risking their insurance voiding a claim by putting on non-approved tyres just to improve looks?

But then again different countries, different rules, in Germany one can do this

@richgod did you ever change your tyres and what was the outcome. I was thinking of fitting 225/50R17 Goodyear Vector 4S Gen 3’s (did something similar with 245/45R18 in lieu of 235/45R18’s on the XPower) both for better grip and marginal improvement in speedo accuracy…

I ran one 16” Bridgestone tyres on my aftermarket 16” rims I put on at first
I had devante tyres on the 18” rims
At the present I am running MG ZS windmill alloys with the Michelin primacy 3 tyres
All in all never noticed any difference with miles per kilowatt
But I drive and charge I’m not a person who tries to get hyper miles per kilowatt
As for the grip the Michelin are the best out of the 3
I only took the 18” wheels off as they were a 40 series profile tyre and I picked up 2 punctures when I hit a pothole
1 tyre was scrap the other repaired
This is the reason I went a 17” wheel to give a bit more sidewall

If you go for taller tyres they will need to be narrower to keep the speddometere correct.

No, the aspect ratio is dependent on the tread width so the tyre will look taller because the tread will be narrower (it won't actually be taller though but the ride will be more compliant). Yes smaller wheels would be better though.

You should ignore the 'exactness' of the speedometer and use a GPS/Waze/Google Maps for more accurate speed readings.
The car speedometer is only a guide and almost always has a lower reading.

Speedometers usually overread i.e. show faster than actual, not underread. The regs re this in a nutshell:
A speedo must never show less than the actual speed, and must never show more than 110% of actual speed + 6.25mph.

My Trophy overreads, but only very slightly, it shows 31 when doing an actual 30mph.

As for our LEAF, it's hilarious, 10% overread at all speeds. I think Nissan did it on purpose so it looks like the range is better than it really is at any given (in this case fake!) speed.

Not on the MG5, it’s spot on..

A Car Speedometer can not be any more accurate than a GPS System - In fact it's about 10% slower - The European GPS System - Gallileo is accurate down to centimeters for mapping.

My main concern is avoiding speeding tickets !

Plus your odometer is dependent on having the correct size tyres. My old Saab 9-3 could be configured (using Tech-2) for different tyre sizes. I would guess the MGs have a similar ability to cope with different specs.

I check the cars speedo against phone GPS, TomTom satnav and Dragy. XPower is spot on with 245/45/18”s vs the stock 235/45/18’s that under-read slightly.

MG5 on stock 215/50/17’s is out by 1 at 30-40mph and 2 at 70mph - having checked tyre sizes I’m considering either 225/50/17’s (+1mph) or 215/55/17’s (+2mph)

All based on new tyres/full tread.

No need, the two MG approved rim/tyre combinations for the MG5 are very similar in circumference, see pic on post #15 below

Hi all
The difference between the pre fl (16” wheel) to the fl (17” wheel) circumference/ diameter of the tyre is negligible so wouldn’t make much difference to the economy as the chart below shows
