This is hilarious

I thought we were talking about wind turbines. There's a lot of wind around here so I have looked into it, but unless you can mount the thing on a very high pole, and it's not so close to habitation that it's going to drive you nuts, it's not really on. Farmhouses and isolated rural homes have them.

Yeah, we were talking about wind.

Microgeneration wind isn't a go-er, unlike solar. You need height and no buildings or trees nearby.

Gary summarises the issue here.

Engineering with Rosie is a good channel for the physics of wind power and how they have got bigger and bigger over time.

Not enough windy days, too expensive to install and too much maintenance needed for domestic wind generation to have acceptable ROI, IMHO - unless you live on very windy hillside.

Why - it’s never too bright or dull or windy to drill the world for oil, never too expensive to erect and maintain hideous structures to extract it, but clearing up after them is always the difficult part. And sending it overland in pipes or trucks or overseas in ships never seems to phase folk.

Accountants and bankers. Every ops director knows the back end never makes it into capital approval. Even if it does 20 years later the cash isn't there. Been there got the t shirt

But it is probably too expensive for you to drill in your garden for oil, if it should so happen that there is some under there.

True story. The manse where I was brought up backed on to a pit. At one point my father said to the pit manager, if you're mining under the church then we have the mineral rights, so we'll be wanting compensation. The pit manager said, forget it. The church and the manse are built on top of the core of an ancient volcano, we're not interested in you. Forget it.

Tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram aedificabo ecclesiam meam.

"You are Peter, and upon this rock will I build my church." If you're wondering how I got it letter-perfect without looking it up, it's the words of a motet by Bruckner which I had to learn.

Interestingly, the pithead was literally yards from the actual church building.

‘Twas Google set my troubled mind at rest.
