So - with our RFL “ luxury car tax” and the new 3 p per mile EV tax I recon that the average motorist doing 12000 miles per year will pay in total just short of £1000 per year !
I appreciate that perhaps a per mile tax system is fair for EV drivers, but to charge standard RFL and luxury car tax on top is in my view taking the pi**.
I’d get rid of the car and by a horse but then I’d probably end up paying hoof tax.
I don’t think the budget move will do anything to promote EV driving in the uk 🤬🥺

It appears that Lux Car Tax will not apply to the long range version… However, I agree that these changes will do little to encourage adoption of EVs. I wonder how they will manage the charge per mile and how long before someone finds a way to clock an EV?

There already is a hoof 'tax', a set of new shoes cost around £140 every 6-8 weeks.

My guess, is not long. If indeed they don't already know. 😉🙂👍

Have the rules changed Mike JS, I thought it applied to anything over £40,000 ?

The charge per mile is apparently not linked to UK mileage. I could drive 1,000 miles in the UK and another 9,000 miles throughout Europe and still be charge for 10,000 miles, supposedly to help repair roads damaged by my car in the UK

Now that the luxury car tax has been increased, I hope MG can get the air suspension version of the IM6 down to £49,999...

Sorry to bump, but...

I received a re-issued V5C today telling me the car's list price was less than £50k and I no longer need to pay the ECS.

This is for the IM6 Performance + blue paint.

Last time I checked (and still on MG's site) this config isn't less than £50k.
Although I'd love to not pay the tax (who wouldn't?) this feels like a DVLA mistake.

Wonder if this happened to others?

It has a list price of £51,540 in that spec so I'd tell no one :)

One of the things I could not understand was why the IM6 performance in white, (which I was considering was priced by MG UK at £50,995, if they'd repriced at £49,995 no issue with ECS and potentially opened up the customer base. Who knows.

I can confirm that I got the same re-issued V5. I do not think it is a mistake.
AI says the following:

  • : The tax is based on the manufacturer's recommended retail price (RRP) plus factory-fitted options. Crucially, the following are excluded from that tax threshold:
    • First Registration Fee: £55.
    • First Year Road Tax (VED): £10 for new EVs.
    • Delivery Charges & Number Plates: Often included in your £52k+ OTR price but excluded from the list price.
  • Dealer Discounts: If the official list price plus factory extras was slightly above £50,000, but MG or your dealer applied a manufacturer contribution or discount that brought the "official" price on the system to £50,000 or less, you avoid the tax.
Not sure if correct but I ain't going to complain....
