Trunk opening half way

I just bought an MG4, and I want to hear if others are experiencing the same thing. The trunk has a gas strut mechanism to help with opening. When I press the button to open the trunk, it doesn’t fully open but just hovers somewhere between open and closed. Is that how it’s supposed to be?

If you manually push the trunk (boot) lid fully open, does it fall back down?

What's the weather like there? Very low temperatures? Gas struts are less effective when it is very cold.

I recall someone else mentioning this issue here, but it's not a common thing that everyone reports.

Gas struts are generally just an assist to help someone lift the trunk, they won’t be powerful enough to take all the weight and lift it as if it was an electric trunk. Same goes for bonnet struts. When you let go they should be able to hold the weight though.

I too remember talk on here about the gas struts failing to keep the weight up in winter for someone but like Siteguru said; it’s not a common fault.

It is just because I also own a Skoda Enyaq which has a massive trunk and without electric help able to open the trunk door fully. Also in the winter. But maybe it is just a design decision.

I took mine" in " for this, it was the start of the cold weather and I wasn't sure if they had slightly de-gassed or not and needed replacing. On the 20 mile journey to the dealers they warmed up and on inspection worked a lot better leaving yours truly looking like a Twonk! Its a bit warmer now and whilst not brilliant they are acceptable , or more to the point not worth the embarrassment of a return trip. If they still are weak in summer then I might go back or even look for better quality aftermarket struts to fit myself.

Found the struts are very temperature responsive on the MG4, colder it get the less assistance they provide. Complete opposite my previous car, Mini Clubman where they over specced the struts as they had to push the rear doors open as a faux powered tailgate.

I have this condition too. But, I assuming, this is done on purpose. If the gas springs too strong, thay may have essessive resistanse forse when electrically closed. And this car have option for trank door electric kit installation.

The MG4 does not have an electric trunk option. There is an aftermarket kit available but that is not a genuine MG part and replaces the factory struts anyway.

My guess would be just a budget thing, although I’ve also heard it said that MG didn’t do electric on purpose as they anticipated the car would be used for ride share services a lot, and apparently they hate electric trunks.

May be you right. Just here in Israel it was proposed by local dealer when you buy new car.
