One of the advantages of using a wall box, is you can add about 25 miles of range for every hour you are on charge.
If you are on a cheaper rate “Off Peak” tariff that has a limited time frame slot, it is important to try and grab as much range in that small allotted time frame.
Using a slow Granny will limit he amount of range you can grab in 24 hours.
If your battery is small ( PHEV ) then this maybe be okay, but with a full BEV and one of the larger packs, you will charging over a number of nights to take advantage of the cheaper rate.

If you have a 32a commando socket fitted and buy a commando to type 2 charging lead it will be fine, lots have done it. If you get the OHME one you can program it too (cheaper if you're an octopus customer).

Doesn't this require some kind of interface to the car, aside from just the type 2 connector?

Your commando socket is wired to your consumer unit. Your OHME lead has a commando plug at one end and your type 2 plug for plugging into the car at the other. The PHME cable includes the box with the comms stuff and switching in it. You manage it from their app.

I was prevaricating getting one of these in Sept at the Octopus special offer price then they jacked the price up from a reasonable £199 to a still-reasonable £299 so I didn't. But they look pretty good .Full price is £449 plus, of course, getting the commando socket fitted.

As smokie said they all come with the correct interface, some are smart as in you can program them like the OHME, some just interface with the vehicle comms and start charging straight away.
