At a guess ... the cover for the point where you'd attached the towing eye bar.

Yeah I would say it’s the cover for where you attached the towing eye if you were to need it.

Ah. I was hoping you might say that, because I’m stuck in some mud and need to be pulled out. As I don’t have a tow hook fitted I thought it wouldn’t be possible

Do check page page 261 (my version at least ) of the manual regarding towing. You should not tow the car as it could incur damages as stated

Put the car in neutral and there's no problem towing for a short distance (such as dragging the car out of mud). The manual warning is about towing the car for longer distances ... if that needs to be done then the rear wheels need to be put on a car towing dolly.

The tow hook point (at the rear at least) is more intended for you towing something/one else.

Is that not, don't tow a distance. Not a few yards, out of some mud. At obviously a very low speed. In Neutral. Else why have towing hooks.

It’s ok. In the process of prying it open with a screwdriver I seem to have broken it off! Not very obvious how it’s supposed to open. A picture in the manual might have been useful!

You usually just have to push it inwards from the top.

Actually with the MG4, push it inwards from the side (not the top), and the opposite side will pop up, then you can remove it.

Ha ha, I 100% agree with this, unfortunately I've just discovered the FM is incorrect on this occasion, you actually do push the towing eye cover from the top on the MG4.

Here's a little video I've just done to show how it's done.

So the rear one you push from the top (or lift from the bottom), and the front one you push from the side ... ergo the FM is actually correct.
