Hi Folks,

What made you choose an MG over a BYD or a Jaecoo etc etc?

There are numerous Chinese brands. And some are cheaper & have more tech. So why did you make the choice you did?

My reason is potentially extremely daft?
But I thought ownership of a brand that was well respected when I was a kid. Seemed better than a.n.other Chinese brand on my driveway.

Good question, well asked ...... I think the first MG4 64 was one of those impulse buys from a salvage auction because of the price, I think I must have been the only person bidding on it, besides the insurance company plants.
The second one, because it looked like very minor damage, a $35,000 car that could be put back on the road for $12,000 ..... I discovered the extent of the damage a few days after I got it home .....
The poverty pack 51, already had two MG4s, so plenty of spare parts, and we needed a car quickly because the Gen 2 Prius had shat an inverter pump and the replacement wouldn't arrive until a week after my second cataract op, we haggled a deal for $30,000 drive away and ready to pick up within a few days ......

Zero regrets, and I met a world of very interesting people via this forum, ya can't put a price on that ......

Mainly, it was exactly what I wanted, a Golf-sized hatchback, and it was within my price range (of less than £30,000 for a new car, and Terry dear, please stop calling it a "poverty pack", Caliban is offended) and I thought it looked good. And yes, that big MG badge on the bonnet had a fair bit to do with that. A couple of cousins of mine had MG sports cars when I was a kid and I was jealous.

At the time MG was the closest dealer and being the cheapest option just fitted into my price range. The MG badge didn't have any relevance, but now I realise it has a big influence on the MG4. designed in England BY MG engineers, it has better behaviour than the Chinese front wheel drive designs.

Designed by British engineers, built by the Chinese, a combination of design and build reliability ..... we are for ever thankfully it was not the Leyland Australia design team that was involved, no two cars in the same production run would have interchangeable parts, power to vehicle size would be in the negative figures ..... and that was the good parts ......

When I was looking for my first EV in September 2022 brands like BYD and Jaecoo didn't exist in the UK, and as others have said, MG was a recognised brand with a physical dealer network.

I had looked at the offerings from the existing non Chinese manufacturers but they were too expensive new and all looked more or less the same then my friend asked if I had seen the MG4.

When I was ready for my 1st EV. I'd always liked the look of the MG4, particularly in Orange. 😉 When they brought out the X Power, it was a total no brainer. There is a lot more choice these days, but am pretty sure, I would have still picked the X Power. For sheer value for money it's unbeatable. And possibly always will be. Considering what you can pick up a new, facelift X Power for now.
🙂👍

For me getting the MG 4 was about design, (a purpose built EV platform not a converted from ICE), and it looked pretty good too.
Range, many other EVs only had a range of 220 miles at the time and the LR MG4 had a range of 270 plus miles.
Price, only the BYD Seal had a comparative range but a price £8-9k more, and a far bigger car.
Summing up, a convincing package with lots of tech in Trophy form....what's not to like

Less than 20 grand including all the charging equipment, thank you Mr Macron. Orange , and good YouTube reviews. Large dealer network in France , liked the test drive. Our first brand new car and now the naive bit. MG had opened up with conjunction with a French dealership a brand new workshop and premises. We wrongly assumed that the equipment and mechanics would be EV trained and all the work ( if needed ) would be done at our local dealer on site. Oh! the things you learn? Touch wood not, needed their services over and above the normal. Phew !

Great reviews and I was very impressed on the test drive. Two and a half years in to my 4 year PCP however, I have decided I wont be having another MG. The initial impression of the MG5 was a nice tech package but experience has highlighted a few issues - Carplay is very hit and miss, no voice dialling or commands, MP3 player very poor navigation around USB device (it lists all tracks not allow folder to be selected). Under the skin the corrosion is alarming at such an early age and I find that the passenger side doesn't have enough room for me, the seat could do with being lower and the drivers seat could with a little more travel back. Overall, I think it's a decent car, sensible performance, good range, nice to drive. Next time around however I'm heading towards Tesla Model Y, VW ID Buzz, Kia EV6 or ????????
