MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

Where exactly does it fit?

Will it be secure or will it wobble about and (potentially) vibrate loose?

You can see from the picture it is attached to a metal plate to stabilise the extension.
Just had call from my dealer explaining they are being distributed to car that have a tech card submission from dealer for oil leak fault. He reckons still no part number yet so they cant order direct for the part so what is being supplied is purely direct from MG UK in response to the tech cards.
So unable to give me a specific date as they dont know themselves until they arrive to them He reckons they have 4 tech cards in for leaks, he said they have sold over 15 and only 4, so far, reported leaks.

Key word being reported. There's a chance that the other 11+ don't even know about the issue and so are blissfully unaware.

Presumably the metal plate itself will be secured to the housing in some way, and not just at the base fixing point. Otherwise you've just got additional mass to vibrate away. :)

The plate has a hole in it , would think this is a direct fixing to the casing.

Update on mine which I took delivery on Tuesday and realised was leaking yesterday, really couldn't fault Richard Hardie in Ashington, they bent over backwards to get me in this morning.

A few hours later and it's been re-filled and their first revised breather kit arrived this morning which they've fitted to mine, so feel quite lucky.

They said it's so new it hasn't even got a part no for them to claim it back yet, apparently slightly fiddly to fit on but maybe because it was the first.

Fingers crossed that's mine sorted!

Brilliant, hopefully mine soon then at South Shields...

Just emailed my dealer saying that I'd like the modified breather fitted before I collect the car, rather than waiting for my drive to be stained and having to take it back. I'd rather be proactive and try and prevent it from happening in the first place.

I'll see how they respond. My car hasn't arrived yet, unless it has and they haven't told me, so it should be possible to do the mod before handover.

They wont do this as new breathers only being fitted to cars that actually leak and dealer has to confirm leak and apply for part via the warranty. Hopefully yours will not leak? Also would think this new breather will be fitted at production for those expecting cars later in the year or next.

Sounds like they don't really know what it is then. As surely if that was the correct repair, all new cars would be fitted with the 'breather'. In not doing this with a new car ready to be given to an owner, is it a case for the next 5 years, say, every car will happily be given to an owner to leak first, then repair.
Sounds like a car equivalent of punch first, questions later.

Which is kind of my point - I don't really want to "hope" that the car won't leak, knowing that a part is available that can be installed before I collect.

I agree with you, however I am just stating what I have been told from the sevice department at my dealer. Probably only a limited amount of modified breathers available at the moment, so those that have leaks deserve to get fixed first.

It may be that the initial batch of breathers is reserved for customers who have seen the oil leak and later on they may retrofit, or even do that at first service.

Who is to say the new breather wont be fitted?
I would think all cars on production line being built now should have modified part fitted.
Time will tell.

Most buyers won't be scouring the net and won't be gawping under thier cars, so I'd expect most leaks won't be seen until oil marks are noted where the car is parked, clean oil too, so even then it might be missed, especially if parked on the public road.

Refer post #1215...I think MG have their head in the sand and do not really know the cause of the oil leak and are just throwing out various possible causes hoping the problem goes away or owners will just give up and put up with the issue.
Some prospective buyers on this forum alone are cancelling their orders so it is obvious others outside the forum would be doing the same and you would think this would be a concern for MG.
Perhaps they don't care as they can easily unload returned cars due to the current waiting list and the supply issue may continue for some time as with many other new vehicles.
I am not blaming dealers as such as many are frustrated due to these issues but they are caught in the middle and are obviously getting all the flak.
