MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

100% this is what they will claim, might not impact the first keeper but you can see it coming when the car gets to 3, 4 year old and is getting picked up by a 2nd keeper.

In 2008 Hyundai Motor Co patented their invention 210 of leaking fluid into the breather. I don't believe that MG designers are ignoring the need for this.

That’s a completely different set up isn’t it? It’s an auto gearbox - different gears, different fluid etc.

To be honest it is still beyond me how such a major design fault can happen at all. We have had gearboxes of (m)any flavours for decades. It's a basic part. The MG4 is in no way special, it's a mass market car with standard components all the way. Has anyone taken a closer look underneath if the gearbox can be related to a known supplier (ZF, Aisin, etc.)?

My guess:
  • the 2e/3e mg fluid leak 'solution' is just for the first produced cars
  • the new produced cars (almost) have the redesigned gearbox (stopping new owners complaints has priority)
  • afterthat a recall for cars with the 'old' gearbox to replace them with the new one

There is no way they will recall all cars and replace gearboxes

MG want to get out of this as cheaply as possible. Depending on the arrangement and who supplies the transfer box they will be looking to recover any costs from the supplier and ‘fix’ the issue with a minimum of outlay. New production cars might have a modified gearbox but those already produced won’t get It unless there is absolutely no alternative.

Unless forced to by DVSA
There would need to be a huge amount of reports from owners to get MG to take responsibility.
Look at the nonsense owners have to go through to get a botched bit of hose with the original breather stuck on the end and that would cost pennies and take no time at all

If the DVSA mandate a recall MG doesn't particularly get to say "nah not today"

Agree with No. 1 and 2, not so sure about 3. 😉

As production and sales figures increase, the early batch might become irrelevant indeed.

Do you really think MG is giving priority to stopping owner complaints? I can‘t see anything proactive apart from an enforced recall for a dangerous locking-in issue.

Even that hasn't been completed yet, it's poor
