Tesla Supercharger Issue MG5 LR

I love my MG5 LR. As said elsewhere, the spread of Tesla SC sharing will hopefully bring down the cost of all public chargers, a point well made in the recent "Dave Takes it on" video on YouTube.

I reckon I do 80% of charging at home, so maybe I am just being a grump!

Les. I said the charger does not know what car is plugged in, neither should it or can it.

Several dealer visits have been made about both battery capacity and max charge rates - the dealer does not have the wit or equipment to diagnose and MG don’t care - they say charge rate is not covered under warranty and the burden of proof is on me the prove battery capacity which I have done several times. MG have ignored the issue.

We know from this site that MGs battery health is hard wired to 1% per year. It’s written somewhere on this site.

Tesla had the foresight to create the worlds most reliable network ahead of mass adoption. They never intended it to be a profit stream.

5 years and ~ 150k miles never waited for a Supercharger.

Public network is a shambles and over priced. MG simply does not go on road trips any more. Besides I won’t pay MG to update firmware again when they work out how to get it to work on the Tesla network.

340 days until the lease ends then no more MG hassles.
Having read all your woes regarding public charging, I feel relieved at not having had the need, I'm also getting the impression that MG UK is totally crap at customer support, I obtained this MG5 LR on MG's own contract hire, and so far have not had any undesirable issues. So my sympathies to all in trouble.
For the most part Lone Ranger life is good with an EV. Here in the little country one can get the edge and back in a day and sometimes on one charge.
EVs are here to stay and the only solution for road transportation.
Today I have done Somerset and back - 320 miles with only momentary pauses to liberate some fluid.
Fast charging must be zero effort - no apps, 5 seconds to connect and 20 to 80% I. 20 minutes - just time for an espresso but not a tea!
EV makers and charging network provided have to realise that by providing crap service consumers will stay in their ICE pollution machines. They also need to offer fast charging at a small margin domestic day rates.
When I see 80+pence for fast charging and PPoor network availability it give the Telegraph another excuse to write about the virtues of hydrogen.
Fortunately I don’t have to use the public networks. Sympathies should be with the poor service providers - consumers have choice and should use it.

Keep being a grump if it means maintaining high expectations.

Hi again Andymazs happy NY to you it appears I had miss read your post and you did in fact say the Tesla charger does not know which car is plugged in so sorry about that, but I’m glad we in fact agree the issue is at MGs door.

It seems your dealer as not been very helpful to you and you also write about battery SOH well if your right about the 1% loss per year that does worry me as mine at one year old 7100 mile showed a SOH off 96.2% so concerning, it is going in again on the 11th to check the software and address the Tesla charger issues I hope so I will ask them to check this SOH again.

Payments for updates in this regard should not apply IMHO and it sounds like you have already made some payment in the passed.

I’m not in your position with 340 days left sometimes I wish I was but apart from Tesla chargers I have had no issues charging on public chargers until this weekend when a couple of Ionity ones refused me a charge but if I was to sell my 5 now it will be around a 50% loss of what I paid for it so out of the question at the moment. So I want my car to be able to use any charger from any network including the brilliant and best Tesla network when on a journey get that sorted and I’m even happier with my 5.

I have just returned from my 2 year service for my pre FL. Was told there were no updates available for the car, and so none done.
I did ask that the charging was looked into specifically.

In general I have had no real issues charging since new on AC or DC but of course am not able to use Tesla SC like all other MG5 owners. I wonder if there is a case of emailing the MG UK MD directly.
According to the website for CEO emails (CEO e-mail addresses) the MD of MG UK is Mr Hao Wang.

However the person that is always touted to the press etc is we all know it is Guy Pigounakis, Commercial Director at MG Motor UK. I don't have his email but.......

Worth a try everybody ?????

Why can the MG4 charge at Tesla SC but not the 5.

I will probably be changing my car for a different one, possibly a brand new 'un but probably a second hand one now more are available, sometime this year.
I like the 5, the MG4 doesn't suit and nor does the ZS, hey we all have our own tastes.
As a contributory factor the lack of ability to charge at Tesla SC in my 5, as these units become more widely available either Tesla branded or otherwise it is quite likely I will be changing to a different brand.

Hi again Gomev so disappointed with your post above no updates are available so the question has to be now is the car up to date please check and if so why can’t we charge on Tesla chargers these are the questions I will be asking when I take mine in next week.

I knew you were due to go in sometime this week and I thank you for your post after your visit disappointing as it is.

Did you go to Sam Luscoomes are some other dealer.?

As for your second post above by all means try writing to the MD but I think all mail to MG goes via Gary Smart the other fellow you mention Guy Pigounakis I wrote to him a while ago when trying to get the roof rails sorted out guess where the reply came from yeh that’s right GS nothing from GP.

Apart from my 5 going in, the wife’s 4 is going in the following day to assess the under tray that’s taken 15 months to get them to look at it when it had its first service a few weeks back they said they would need to obtain permission from MG to do anything with it if anything.

Yes I went to Luscombe's, so would expect them to apply any updates if available. They did say they would when I gave them the keys.
Normally an email to a CEO or exec would be picked up by their secretary and dealt with by them or by the exec themselves. They would usually pass it on to customer services but as it will be coming from them usually achieves more status. Also the execs don't want the publicity that could arise with not dealing with problems.
The website's purpose is to provide email details and is used widely when their are problems with any company.

There is a thread on a FB group about this topic. Some people from there I am sure are on here too.

FL MG5 has been confirmed working with Tesla chargers. For some it was from day 1 for others they needed a recent update.

Tesla not far from me has just opened up their charger to all cars. I will report back when I get a chance to go try mine.

My pre-FL MG5 goes in for it’s 2nd service next week, so I’ll report back what I can.

Do we have a definitive list of the current software versions?

Thank you, please do and no we don't have software versions, never have had as far as I am aware and there is nowhere to look for them.

Well as I said earlier did work j like that in 2021 for me but perhaps things have changed.
Well I’m surprised at Luscombe’s they have a good reputation for excellent service not that I have had any dealing with them.
I will see how I get on next week with mine at Chorley MG.

I don't have any problems or issues with Luscombe's. (Unless of course I find out later that there are updates available that weren't applied).

Hi Simorgan, yes that’s right in fact Miles has said the same but also said the earlier LR model should also work with Tesla but from members here it appears not.

I would have expected the FL not to be a problem as the MG4 is OK and infotainment systems is the same so maybe the software is the same as both have Ismart as well.
Les.

My FL doesn't currently work with Tesla. There is a chargeable update available that I hope will be done (free of charge) by my dealer at its first service on Monday. The workshop manager said it wasn't a recall update and that he would have to get authorisation from MG before installing it on my car. I'll post an update next week when I've had a chance to try it.

Hi I’m in the same boat FL that won’t work and I was told simlar by my dealer that they need authorisation before even looking at it going in on the 10 or 11 next week anyhow.

Good morning Les — here you are :-

I would like to give another update on the SuC store on the MG5. Unfortunately, I'm one of the unfortunate people where it doesn't work. During a workshop visit in the autumn, I asked my agent to install the corresponding update. Unfortunately, he stood in the way and didn't want to play anything without a ticket from MG anyway. So I tried to get such a ticket and have finally received an answer from MG. Essentially, it contains the following paragraph (emphasis by me):

It is true that there is an update for your MG5 in order to also be able to charge on the Tesla SUC. Your MG agent can play this for you and he does not need a ticket from MG for this. Please contact your MG agent again. If he has difficulties with the update, he can obtain technical support from the appropriate specialist department.

I wish you every success!

I also wish us all success using Tesla chargers on our MG5. Enjoy. Archie.
