Tesla Supercharger Issue MG5 LR

Good morning Les — here you are :-

I would like to give another update on the SuC store on the MG5. Unfortunately, I'm one of the unfortunate people where it doesn't work. During a workshop visit in the autumn, I asked my agent to install the corresponding update. Unfortunately, he stood in the way and didn't want to play anything without a ticket from MG anyway. So I tried to get such a ticket and have finally received an answer from MG. Essentially, it contains the following paragraph (emphasis by me):

It is true that there is an update for your MG5 in order to also be able to charge on the Tesla SUC. Your MG agent can play this for you and he does not need a ticket from MG for this. Please contact your MG agent again. If he has difficulties with the update, he can obtain technical support from the appropriate specialist department.

I wish you every success!

I also wish us all success using Tesla chargers on our MG5. Enjoy. Archie.

Brilliant and thank you Archev,
Les

Ok so my FL5LR had its first service Nov. Before this I had not tried a Tesla charger.

There was an VCU update done during the service but I do not have details as to what this was.

My local Tesla Tottenham London has now opened their chargers so have gone to do a test.
I tested with two different chargers using both the app and credit card to initiate the charge.

In both cases it failed to start a charge.
The charger just reported the car was not connecting.
On the car itself it showed an "Electric grid abnormal".

I am going to contact the dealer that did the service see what they say.

That VCU/CCU update is indeed a recall but does not solve the tesla charging issue. You need a separate update for that. Indeed contact the dealer.

Ok so do you know what it is that needs an update the list below was quoted in the podcast as being a possible cause and may need updates but do you know of any others?
BMS CC
BCU
CCU
EVC
BCM
As anyone hear yet any luck in getting this issue cured I know several are going in soon for service and some have had there’s done without a fix including myself I to have had there are no updates available and none was done so my car is going back on Thursday as I have asked them to check again So fingers crossed.
Les.

Hi I’m in the same boat FL that won’t work and I was told simlar by my dealer that they need authorisation before even looking at it going in on the 10 or 11 next week anyhow.

Just successfully charged at the Sidcup open Tesla charger after having the update done along with the first service yesterday. I chatted with the service manager who said that it would normally be a chargeable update but as a I bought the car from them they would do it for free along with the service. He also said that they had to get specific authority from mg to install it on my car. If they didn't then mg wouldn't honour the warranty I'd the update bricked the car. Seems like a reasonable attitude from the dealer(but not from mg)

MG Germany has clearly stated that no authorisation is required by the dealer to install the Tesla charging update, I gather same applies in the Netherlands, different rules for UK or dealers just trying to fob us off?

Hard to say. Germany and Holland are in the EU ,UK isn't . Maybe that's the reason ?

I think a OBD tool and the appropriate software App that does have the capability to divulge the software operating system of the car.
Not sure if it is powerful enough to investigate each and every module in the car though ?.

The unofficial Thai app for the ZS manages to give the firmwares for all EVCUs, though you have to be charging to see the OBC firmware number.

I suspect it should not be too hard to write an app that worked on any reasonable vehicle. Maybe one day...

Hi Les, sorry to be so late replying. I've just been out to take a look and my version numbers are exactly the same as yours. I didn't get anything really precise about what the update was. IT was on the invoice as "Charging update for Tesla issue" and the service manager just referred to it as an "EVCC update".
It seems weird that if you have a really good relationship with your dealer you can probably get it done for nothing while they have the car in doing something else but if not then you are probably going to have to pay to get it done.

Hi Kevin thanks for your response yeh the picture I put up as been rightly point out I think by Mickeysw as being for the infotainment unit only.

So in effect nothing to do with the issue can I ask who is you dealer please that has sorted your car out if you don’t mind, as it seems they are on the ball with this matter.
Thanks again
Les

It was MG Apple. The showroom is in Gravesend but the service centre is in Meopham. (both Kent in case you are not local). I'm fairly sure that if I hadn't bought the car from them they would have charged me for the update (which doesn't seem right from MG but I guess the service centre isn't a charity).

I seem to recall that someone else on this site also got the same good service from MG Seaford
