Tesla Supercharger Issue MG5 LR

My dealer said if they search the VIN they only see ones marked as critical but if they connect the car they see all available updates. I am assuming this is correct. They are speaking to MG about which update is needed for the Tesla issue;
I think slmorgan42 hit the nail on the head:

The majority of dealers check the VIN of the car and it shows as ‘no updates available’

Only a few techs will plug in the MG diagnostic tool and check for available updates of each ECU.

Even less will then take the chance and actually go ahead with the updates for fear of messing up a perfectly fine car.

MG UK doesn’t seem to have any guidelines on what needs to be done when a customer is looking for a Supercharger update…

I agree!

As I posted elsewhere, my pre-facelift 5 has been booked in for its second service in March. I asked about updates and was told that any would be performed ONLY if MG list them as "necessary/mandatory", for fear that, if the update fails, the garage is left with a bricked car.

I have therefore requested that they directly ask MG UK about this specific issue.

So, picked up my new MG5 Trophy facelift on Saturday. Have tried the following superchargers without success. Newmarket (Tesla v4), Trumpington (Tesla v3), Trumpington (Shell), Colchester (Fastned).

Called the supplying dealer (Baylis, Gloucester) - said they would call me back - after saying had I tried locking it? They didn't.

I have 2 questions:

1. Am I doing it wrong? In the complete absence of any advice in the supplied manual, I stop, park, power down vehicle. Open charge port, remove plugs, plug in charging lead and activate (Tesla). It usually then says communicating and then sometimes something about the power being bad or asks me to "make sure power mode is run" whatever that means. What is the correct sequence?

2. Would someone who is able to supercharge an MG5 Facelift (Trophy) please post a picture of the firmware versions that their car has?

Many thanks.

Am considering taking it back as not fit for purpose.

I can't see the firmware versions on my car. Only the infotainment stuff and that isn't useful.

For the car to work on a Tesla charger that is open to non Tesla cars it needs to have the latest software update. As you will see from reading this thread we are still trying to understand from MG exactly which software update is needed.

This is the error you see when trying without the correct update.

Only the Tesla ones are called Superchargers, that is their brand, the others are generic rapid or ultra-rapid chargers.
You are doing things correctly, car off, plug in, activate charger by whatever means you choose - contactless, RFID, app or however...

Many thanks for the replies so far! I am in a dialogue between 2 dealers, the selling dealer and my local one.

The selling dealer (SD) told me to go to the local dealer. The local dealer in Colchester says its chargeable work to diagnose and upgrade the software (that should have been upgraded before delivery) - at least £150. I have asked SD to check if they really did the upgrades.

SD is working on it since I told them I wasn't going to be paying for what should have been done pre-delivery. I asked them to pave the way with local dealer.

I will report back. Hopefully I won't have to resort to a Youtube humiliation or Barrister.

I've emailed the dealer I bought the car from originally as they were quite helpful in getting the "check HV battery" problems I had with it initially so will see if they're more useful.

Not sure it helps but it seems unless MG flagged an update as a recall the dealer will charge as MG does not pay them.

This is of course crazy when the car is not working correctly. I am still in discussion with my dealer around this.

I tend to agree. I had a breakthrough today when I went to a Fastned and locked the car after plugging in. Then I activated it and it charged! After a few minutes (and a Greggs) I disconnected, drove round the block and tried again, this time with the car unlocked - it charged again!

I contacted the selling dealer and gave them the update. I then told them that if they can confirm that my car was updated with the 'Tesla Update', I will take it and try. (Nearest Tesla Supercharger is 45 mins away). No reply received so far. I too will be pressurising dealer over this. I consider it a significant limitation with cost implications.

I finally got a reply from [email protected]. They say:

"following testing our vehicles are compatible with any Tesla charger which Tesla have opened to the network. As long as your vehicle is carrying the latest level of software. There is no specific update for this it is the software version of the car itself."

They won't tell me what the latest level of software is, all they can say is:

"The dealership can contact our technicians if they require assistance with the update when the vehicle is there"

I currently have SW Version EP22_MCEUK_NAV_31.13_200611_R
so will see what the dealer says.

So ridiculous they cannot say what is needed. There are a number of updates MG have flagged as optional. Would really help to know what is actually needed.

Hi again blob84 I’m so sorry to hear of your problems today so how you can check the CCU I don’t think you as the owner can but others may know differently.

With the door not opening the car automatically locks the doors when you set off, this is normal and to open the doors you often need to pull twice on the handle inside the car I can’t say this as ever been an known issue on the MG5 it’s just the way it is.

Not to confuse this with a problem the MG4 had.
The MG4 did have issues with people being locked in the vehicle in the very fist batch but a recall was issued by MG to correct that faulty problem but there as been nothing reported on the 5 to my knowledge anyhow.
But as I said the handle needs to be pulled twice to open the door I think the first tug disengages the dead lock and the second tug opens the door lock that’s how it is.
Page 128 of the vehicle handbook is here below hope this helps

We have an facelift MG5 which has a problem opening both passenger doors irrespective of how many times you pull the handle.
Been into dealership and parts on order.

What with this and the ongoing Tesla supercharger shenanigans I’m afraid I am regretting going for this vehicle…

and @slmorgan42 .

My dealer conversation today went like this:

"Its a paid upgrade."

(Lengthy discussion about why none of this was mentioned pre-sale)

How much is it? "Don't know". Well why don't we find out in case we're spending ages on the phone over a fiver? "OK"

Now waiting for a 'Master Technician' to call me and explain something to me. However, it seems plain that MG are just trying to squeeze the customer for a few more ££ not realising their goodwill is going down the pan.

Will update when I hear more.

Someone just posted on a FB group that his FL had the following updates applied and it now works with a Tesla charger

These 3 updates
BMS
VCU
EVCC

Did not mention the CCU

Supercharging update success! Facelift Trophy model, one of the first in the UK. First time around the dealer tried an upgrade of the Charger module but that didn't work. Yesterday morning I dropped it off for them to try again, they had to keep it overnight but today they told me that they had to update the following: BMS, EVCC, VCU. I can now charge at far more reasonable prices in Thetford when we go to Norwich (Thetford Tesla usually 50p/kWh vs Barton Mills at usually 80p) -- Yaay!
