Tesla Supercharger Issue MG5 LR

I use MG Apple, whose servicing is done in Meopham . I had mine done back in January and I think that they would have charged me for the update if I wasn't having the first service done at the same time.
Thanks so much- sounds like a great tip and doable drive from us. Will drop them a line!

Does anyone know of a dealer near Birmingham who will do the upgrade free of charge when servicing the car? My dealer, in Redditch, wants to charge me and I'd like to be able to say "OK, I'll take to so and so down the road then"

Hi again all concerned in this thread so this is a follow up to my post #559.
On my return journey from SE London 230 miles, I decided I would sample a couple more Tesla Superchargers, so I stopped at Banbury just off the M40 as I had tried these ones before my update was done with no success.
So they are V3 chargers at Banbury, so plugged in, opened the Tesla app to start the charge. All ok and the unit started charging immediately from the app, I didn’t really want to charge much so I just left it charging for a couple of minutes to make sure it was okay. Which it was, so then I continued north to my next intended stop which was at Trentham Gardens 2 miles or so off the M6.

At this Tesla point, there are Tesla V3 and V4 units so this time I pull onto V4 unit. These V4s unlike the ones at Luton in my first post, had card readers fitted. So first off I plug-in and try to start a charge with the Tesla app again but no luck, so I did the same as I did at Luton and put the car into ready mode, go into the charging screen in the infotainment screen, and select start charge. Again it didn’t start, so I'm a little puzzled and I am down to 13% of battery, and the panic is just beginning to set in. I don’t know why, so I get out of the car, unplug it, then plug back in and try the card reader with my American Express card. Not accepted strangely, as it’s the same card I have registered in the Tesla app that works fine but wont work here. So I plug out and start again with a different card, a Visa card from Barclays, and it starts the charge.
Thank God.
So as I said I’m quite low, 13%, after a minute or so it’s charging at 73 kW and for the rest of the charge it’s between 64-76 kW varying around that. So once I have enough to get me home (no point in charging more than needed as it’s cheaper at home), I try to stop the charge by offering the card to the reader again but it won’t stop it. I get back inside the car and bring up the charging screen, again tap finish charging in the screen, and it stops.

So points to take note of are:
* Tesla V3s are no problem at all use the Tesla app just plug in job done

* V4 if no card reader is fitted, plug in and select the charger in the App, but you may need to start the charge from the screen in the car see my post #559.

* V4s with a card reader: plug in, touch the screen with your credit card, and it will start. To stop the charge you my need to use the screen in the car or the MG app, and then plug out

Keep in mind each time you charge on a Tesla unit they take £20 from your account then a day or so later give you the £20 back and charge you for what you have used.

Bit long winded I know folks, but might help someone out.

One other thing I have noticed is how clever Tesla have been opening up the chargers they have opened to all.

What I mean by that is to the best of my knowledge and the of the 4-5 that I have tried to date, they are all away from the motorways by a few miles
Examples:
  • Trafford centre 1 mile off the M60
  • Luton 2--3 miles off the M1
  • Banbury 2–3 miles off the M40
  • Trentham 2–3 miles off the M6.

None off the motorway services with superchargers are open to all as far as I’m aware.
They certainly know what they are doing and how to make lots more money.

I reckon on this latest 4-5 hundred miles I have just done by using the Tesla network at between 35-55p as opposed to gridserve and
InstaVolt which I would normally use on this journey 3-4 times per year I have saved in the region of 25-30 pounds so thank you Elon and Tesla for your fantastic network, and thank you again to Miles Roberts and Chorley MG for getting MG to issue and install the updates.
Les.

Very small screen on the rear side of the V4 units but well lit.

Hi. Have been following this thread for a while and registered to be a part of the community and update on my experience.
I have an MG5 LR pre FL, 22 plate. I went in for first service at Aberdeen MG, recently taken over by AC. Kept asking and probing them about updates and rapid charger issue. I have struggled in the 9 months of ownership with DC charging, arriving at rapid chargers, not knowing if the DC charge will work. No Tesla charging but also failed on few CPS chargers and BP at different locations.
No fault found in the software and no updates as per the dealership. They have contacted MG but are waiting on a reply from last week for updates. Overall, disappointing, despite showing this forum and discussions.

Any idea what update is needed for the facelift MG5 Trophy to be able to charge at a Tesla charger?

Just tried to charge again at a Tesla (non Tesla enabled) charger, after having the car serviced and asking several oblivious staff about updates to software/ firmware, which they said they did, but had no idea what it was for, turns out it was for the wrong car (MG4) and was bug fixes… so far my experience with MG and their staff has been pretty horrendous I’m disappointed to say.

(My software looks to be V12 still) but not sure if that’s relevant to the Tesla charging issue.

Can they not just update it to the most recent software as standard? 🤷‍♂️

If you go back up thread to #546 you will find there all the information you need My car is a FL MG5 and had an EVCC update and now works on open to all Tesla Superchargers

I have my pre-facelift LR booked in at Luscombe's in Leeds for the update.
Whilst booking in, the service guy (James), said that my car wasn't on the list for the update but still booked it in.
There was no issue with requesting it and James was fully aware of the update.
Fingers crossed for when it goes in early May for the update. 🤞

Nice one good luck and let us know, I'm booking in to Luscombe's for first service in June so keen to hear how it goes (FL MG5 here)

There shouldn't be any issues with a facelift version.
Cheers, although when I did try in the autumn last year with Luscombe's (September time?) they were unaware of this issue (although tbf it was in its early stages then!)

I'll get booked in and see. It's not crucial for me for my usual driving but for the occasional longer trip it's a hassle not being able to include open Tesla sites in my plans.

I agree or the long range earlier models for that matter but I don’t think the earlier model Standard range 51 kWh can be updated maybe a different EVCC but I don’t know that for certain but the dealers should so ask as there’s nothing to lose.

Just got a reply this morning from my nearest MG garage. Arnold Clark at Linwood:

“I have spoken to the workshop, who has advised an update for tesla charging we are unaware of.
This is not something we have heard of. Have you testing of different chargers?
Apon test at branch all was working as should.”

Next booking date is 27/06/2024

They don’t seem to have a clue. I will try somewhere else I think. Perhaps I’ll need to drive to Chorley! 😅🤦‍♂️

To be fair mine didn’t know about it either but they agreed to book the car in. When they connected the car to the system it flagged these updates as being required.

I have just come off the phone to my MG dealership (Toomey's) and was told that on the facelift version there is an update however the pre facelift it is not covered by the warranty and it's classed as an enhancement not an update at a cost of an eye watering £1000 plus labour.
Apologies if this information has already been on the forum.
I am extremely disappointed by this, hey ho! I may just leave MG for my next car unless they come out with a new MG5 that is worthy of my hard earned money.

Well Rooney what you have been told is wrong and if you look back in this thread you will read several owners have had the pre FL car update free of charge so if they are not doing it for you all I can suggest is try a different dealer in you area or EMail MG and explain to them what you have been told.

@Rookery

I am one of those owners of a pre-facelift MG5 whose dealer has done the update, at no cost to me! Currently, due to a dearth of the requisite Tesla chargers in my area of the country I have been unable to ascertain whether it works, but ...

You need to "persuade" your dealer service manager or technician to speak directly to MG Technical. For me, the update followed a phone call between the service department technician and MG. It took little more than 30 minutes to actually carry out.

That's interesting, I think I will chase this up with MG in the first instance. Thanks Les.

Having been looking at the thread prior to my MG5 LR pre-FL going in for its service yesterday I was excited to see that there is a fix available for the Tesla supercharger issue. I arrived at Macklin Motors MG just outside Edinburgh and spoke to the service department about the update resulting in a blank look. I was then told there was no recall updates and I said about the forum and information provided by Les and other that the update was available free of charge and this had been confirmed by MG. I got told by the service manager said there was an update coming that hadn't been released yet and they're not sure how other people have received it - which clearly isn't true!

I tried my luck asking one of the technicians walking about the dealership and he went away and came back with the same answer unfortunately. I think my next step is to send MG an email explaining what I've been told, but was wondering if anyone up in Central Belt Scotland has had any luck with any dealers?

@ElectricBenSolar if you have any luck anywhere please let me know and I'll keep you updated on my progress.

@Les burrows and others involved thanks for the progress on this!

UPDATE
Thought I would try Arnold Clark MG Edinburgh to ask the question. Just phoned and they said there was an update available for my car and it would be free of charge, which seems promising. When I asked if they could confirm details of the update like the version or what it would update so I could check it against what's been posted on the thread they said they didn't have any and "don't believe everything on the forums", which I was thought was ironic! Anyway I'll update after 23rd May when it's booked in and hopefully will be able to use the Tesla chargers.

Thanks,
Andrew
