    Solaredge charger issues

Just had a Solaredge charger fitted. First charge for a trial worked but when disconnected the car then came up with a system fault and refused to power up. Disconnected the battery and the car then reset ok. Until this is resolved would suggest caution about Solaredge chargers.

    Home Charger Disabled by Insect

Son rang to ask me to bring our MG5 over as his Leaf wouldn't charge on his Zappi, but would charge on the granny charger. MG wouldn't charge either so we started investigating the tethered cable for damage and sprayed some WD40 around the terminals. Still no luck. Then we noticed something in...

    Boot Locking

I expect many owners will already know this but probably worth posting anyway for those who don't. If you open just the boot when the car is locked and shut it again it is locked automatically. However if you put the key into the boot (as I did in error) and shut the lid then after about a...

The arguments for EVs over Hydrogen fuelled cars

I came across this discussion about the use of hydrogen as part of the solution to achieving net zero. The discussion is based on hard facts delivered by a very eminent Professor (David Cebon of Cambridge University) and should be required viewing for all MPs and the media who frequently spout...

Effect of wind speed/direction on consumption

Just been to LHR and back from Jct 18 of M4 with a strong SW wind. It's blindingly obvious physics but the impact of wind speed on M/KWhr is much more noticeable in an EV when one is concentrating on the GOM and wondering what margin will be left when getting back home! It was 4.5 on way there...

Software Updates and Gearbox Oil at Service.

Just talked to a dealer about Exclusive first service and asked whether they will update software. He said that as of the end of last year MG has told them not to update software unless there is a software fault. Should have bought a Tesla which updates itself online, well half a Tesla for the...

    Emergency Call Button

In trying to turn on the interior lights I accidentally hit the Emergency Call button which worked very quickly and effectively, allowing me to apologise to the emergency services about how incompetent I was and that I didn't need any help. Then it went off again, very embarrassing. Having...

Nov 17th Budget - Tax impact for EVs

The tax levied on the average medium sized ICE car per year on its running costs is nearly £1000. For an EV charging at home it is less than £100. If you were the Chancellor what would you do on Nov 17th?

    Rear Wiper Logic

As it has been a very dry year I haven't really used the rear wipers much. This morning when reversing down my drive I turned them on to see where I was going and they didn't work. As soon as I selected N they worked fine. Following some investigation I worked out that the fiendish Chinese...

    Diesel Running Costs v EV

I have an diesel estate car and on a long trip with 4 up at 70 I usually get over 70 mpg (winter or summer) which works out at a fuel cost of about 12p. Clearly servicing is more costly. The car's range is about 700 miles. If I have to use a charger at 50p per KWhr then my MG5 would cost between...

    Dashboard reflections in windscreen

I haven't been able to find a thread on this subject except in the MGZS forum. Driving down country lanes with trees shading the road edge and in bright sunshine the reflections off the dashboard top in the windscreen makes seeing bicyclists/pedestrians on the side of the road quite challenging...

    Parking

I have 2 cars of similar size etc, A Skoda Octavia estate and an MG5 LR. Neither my wife or I have had any trouble parking the Skoda neatly but both of us find that with the MG, whether we go in forwards or backwards, we always end up at an angle in the parking space however hard we try to get...

Danger when filling screen washer reservoir

Just filled the screen wash reservoir for the first time using a container with a proper spout but as happens occasionally I split a small amount which disappeared under the motor bay cover. Thought I had better see where it had gone and was surprised that immediately beneath the filler cap is...

    7 Year Warranty T&Cs

Had the car 2 months and was looking through all the documentation to find the 7 year warranty terms and conditions. Nothing in what the dealer gave me. Found a paragraph in the handbook which said to look at mg.co.uk. Couldn't find anything there apart from sales pitch for new MG5LR. Rang the...

    Door Mirror Folding While Driving

The door mirrors can be folded whilst driving by depressing the adjustment knob downwards and pressing again to unfold. But this function seems to be speed sensitive and won't work above about 10mph. This is not mentioned in the manual, but I assume it is built like that as driving at higher...

    Speed Limit Sign Recognition

Took delivery this week and so far delighted but finding out the quirks. The speed limit sign recognition system mostly works but is not so good on country lanes with trees/branches in the way. However whilst it picks up 30, 40, 50, 60 and derestricted signs it has so far failed to recognise 20...
