Because AC 22KW's are generally much less expensive than the rapids (theres a 22KW around me for 33p/Kwh, compared to the rapids that are nearing £1/Kwh) , not to mention you can leave the car on a AC and it will not just charge to 100%, but it will charge to 100% and balance the cells. Compare this to an AC where regular use will necessitate regular balancing and some cars don't want to be charged above 80%.Where would you use it to get back the cost of the upgrade, why not just use a rapid charger.
You should be getting 11kWh on a 3 phase 22kW charger; if you aren’t its because your cable only handles one phase.I'm also a bit disappointed about the 7kWh on-board ac charger. There's plenty of 22kWh chargers around which I could use, but plugging in and getting only 7kWh renders them practically useless. It is penny-pinching by the manufacturer and they need calling out on it,. It can't just be coincidence that the facelift model got revised headlamps and rear courtesy lights.
Interesting, I will check that out this week. You should be getting 11kWh on a 3 phase 22kW charger; if you aren’t its because your cable only handles one phase.
it looks like I may be wrong and only EU versions have the 11kW charger on board...let us know if you tested it ;-)Interesting, I will check that out this week.

No, this is incorrect. You should be getting 11kWh on a 3 phase 22kW charger; if you aren’t its because your cable only handles one phase.
You’re right that it won’t work for the MG5 in the UK (MG have confirmed that there isn’t a 3 phase charger on the UK spec vehicle), but you’re also wrong that 3 phase always has to be 22kW. The EU spec MG5 has an on board 11kW charger, capable of working at 32A on one phase or 16A on three phases. No, this is incorrect.
The charging for each phase is 32 amps. we run on 230v nominal. so 32 x 230 = 7360w i.e. 7kw.
So 3 phase is 3 x 7360w, = 22080w i.e. 22kw.
You will only get 7kw on a single phase.
not trying to be condescending, just trying to explain. If somebody thinks im wrong please do say, im not an electrical expert.
Thanks, Missed the detail that the inverter was only 16a on 3 phase. 11kw, vs 7kw, Not missing much really, even if one is 50% faster , its still too slow to be useful for charging at speed. You’re right that it won’t work for the MG5 in the UK (MG have confirmed that there isn’t a 3 phase charger on the UK spec vehicle), but you’re also wrong that 3 phase always has to be 22kW. Thanks for sharing. Is this for the UK model or EU?To follow up, I can confirm definitively that the MG5 facelift can charge at 11kW — here it is on a 22kW charger using a 3 phase cable.
Thanks, I wasn’t sure if it’s worth investing in a type 2 22kw charging cable.UK model Trophy
I did, because you get the best of both worlds. Will work at 7kW on a 7kW charger and 11kW on both 11kW and 22kW chargers. Especially if goi g abroad this can matter — imagine using a French 11kW charge point with a single phase cable, you’d only get 3.5kW (single phase 16A)!Thanks, I wasn’t sure if it’s worth investing in a type 2 22kw charging cable.
