50kW Charging Time

Apologies for the pedantic question (still new to EVs), but I'm on the verge of getting a MG S5, and looking for some clarification on charging.

According to data on Autotrader, charging via 50kW public charger, the S5 takes over 2 hours to reach 80%. Yet most other cars in its class and including the MG4 take around a hour. Can anyone with experience confirm how long on average it takes to reach 80% charge using a 50kW public charger?

It stays above 50kW to over 80%, so you can do some simple maths.

64kWh * 0.8 = 51.2kWh

Let's say 10% loss, and starting at 10% is the usual quoted charge time, so we need 46kWh. That's 55 minutes to reach 80%.

50kW chargers were the common speed (other than Tesla) up to a few years ago. Mostly now they are 150kW or more, and you'd be better going to a site with lots of them, rather than a single 50kW which might be occupied or out of order.

Were you planning to rely on a charger at a local Lidl or something?

Basically, as 5teep mentioned above, 50kW seems to be the norm from what I've so far encountered, so its why I used that as a benchmark.

How important is the charging speed to you and how often will you be charging away from home?
 
There's also the battery heating option too, that should speed it up a bit, although I'm not sure how much at only 50kW.
 
Most of the chargeplace Scotland chargers are 50kW, it's what the various councils preferred as bang for buck.
The fastest rapid chargers (150kW or more) are more on major highays because people get impatient waiting for a charge .... and that is the sort of driving where you are likely to take the battery down to 10% or less ..... these are a lot more expensive per kwh than the smaller chargers ...
If you are only down to 50% driving locally, chances are you will add enough to just get back home and charge at the cheaper rate or even direct from solar and cost you nothing really ....

I agree. I rarely charge away from home/work, only on the occassional long travels which is about once every 3-6 months.

Ultra Rapid they call them, I used a Gridserve 150kW a couple of weeks ago coming up through England and it was only 49p per kWh. I was pleasently surprised. Highland council Rapids are all 79p and 50kW max.
I have used a couple of 150/100kW Pogo chargers but they are not on my normal routes so rarely get near them, both 79p as well I think.

I'm likely to travel to Manchester at least once if not twice a month, I just want to factor the time and cost of those journeys.
 
That's interesting, for some reason I was starting to think that 150kw chargers would always be more expensive than 50kw chargers, not the case it seems.
Maybe it used to be more common but BP pulse, for instance, doesn't give such a discount any more (not that they have a good reputation with users on here).

Best option would be to find a slow charger somewhere near where you are going in Manchester, but that might not be possible.

This is what ABRP suggests for an MGS5 LR...

They might be ultra rapid over there, they are just DC fast chargers over here, an ultra rapid is 350kW.
Our motoring body, RAA in South Australia but each state has it's own alphabet name) CCS slow chargers are 7kW up to 22kW and between 37c/kWh peak (5pm to 10pm) and 30c/kWh any other time.
DC fast chargers are 150kW to 200kW and between 73c/kWh peak and 64c/kWh any other time.

Other for max profit in very busy areas can be up to $1.25/kWh for the ultra rapid units.

3.5kW(slow) AC
Fast 7-22kW AC
Rapid 25-50kW DC, you can see 80kW Rapids about now too.
Ultra Rapid 100kW and above.
