I absolutely agree. Even if it wasn't originally envisaged that people would put weight on these things when getting out of the car they should be strong enough to take it.

Mine started to move so I removed it and found the long plastic bolt support was starting to give way. I tightly taped some alloy angle left over from tiling the bathroom each side of it and it's been fine ever since.

But yes I agree it's not sturdy enough for the job.

And you were right to tell me to do this some months back... but I didn't get around to it and it has now got into a beyond-repair state.

Neither of us use the rest to get in and out. But even if we did, it should be solidly made. It seems to me it was designed as too lightweight for our market (might be fine in Asia?) and they should simply fix it.

I mean it is just a small piece of plastic. It wouldn't be hard to change nor expensive.

If it fails again, I'll be making a replacement either 3d printed or an adjustable metal version because actually the angle isn't comfortable for either of us.

Ok, we now have a new one fitted for £75 and I have inspected the old.

The plastic is very thin and both mounts have failed, one much more than the other. It is a simple case of poor design - I think it needs metal to handle the twisting force from large feet. Not sure why the plastic has such large cut outs.

I recommend anyone with any wobble at all take it off and reinforce the plastic as @Ian Key has suggested.

I'll probably repair the old one as a spare, since I don't know the new ones are any different and I am expecting it to fail again.

You have one of the older ones by the look of it. Newer ones don't have the slots up the side so should be stronger, although I don't think the plastic looked any thicker. I should have taken a photo.

Yes, my broken one was made in November 2022. So that means the new one does have changes then, good.

Oh I forgot to say, the footrest part number doesn't appear to include the two square plastic bits to cover the bolt holes. Fortunately I kept the one that had come off and it wasn't hard to fix it back on again.

Mine started moving around this morning and the plastic has broken as per everyone else who has posted images. I have logged with dealer as a warranty issue and asked if they could pre-order the part for the appointment date. Not being funny the automatic breaking with nothing in front of the car has caused me to push down on this rest a few times.. along with the cold weather.. it's just not fit for purpose in my view.. my car is 6 months old 3700 miles .. 2 year lease.. I should probably tell them to order three replacements to cover the remaining lease period lol.

I doubt there is an alternative option. I taped some aluminium angle used for protecting the corner of tiling to the legs of mine when it started to move 6 months ago and it hasn't moved since.

I guess alternatively if you had some tubing of the right diameter you could slide that over the legs.

The footrest on my Mazda was made of a block polystyrene covered in carpet. It was still good when I sold it three years later.

Don't expect it to be covered by the warranty - you might get lucky though!
