It would seem that my recent purchase of an MG4 has missed its first service.

Mileage now is 6500, and the car was manufactured in November 24. (or first sold)

Motorpoint has given me a spurious first service invoice written yesterdy, which refers to August 2025 as the actual service date.

It would seem that the car has been inactive to 6 months.

I like the car, it drives well, I wonder if the solution to the possible problem that the manufacturers warranty is invalid, that a catch up service now would work.

Such a shame that a good car has been mis-sold, and an attempt to con me, by Motorpoint.....

Or do I just take it back and let them have the problem.....

If you miss a service - the warranty is gone. It counts from the first day of registration.

I don't quite understand the issue. If the car was registered in Nov 24, and then serviced in Aug 25 then the first service has been done?

My car was registered in April 25 and had it's first service November 25.

That is not uncommon: My car was produced in April auf 2023 but got delivered to the previous owner by the end of September 2023. It got registered in September, so therefore service is always in September.

The point is that Motorpoint say the service was done in August 2025, but their invoice for this service was only written out and dated yesterday, so according to the invoice, it's been done 6 months too late.

I'd agree that the (almost certain) lack of warranty, and their deception regarding it, are key reasons to reject the car for a full refund - I know a warranty isn't the Be All and End All, but with an EV the last thing you want to lose is the battery warranty. Whilst the chances of the battery pack failing are very small, you don't want to be the one who encounters it and has no warranty support.

Do MG state it needs to be serviced by an MG dealer to maintain warranty? I am sure this was made an unenforceable requirement for warranty work.

They can't say that, officially ... but I suspect some elements of the service regime may be more difficult for a non-MG service agent to perform; and how does the service get registered with MG? (Which is almost certainly a requirement to maintain the warranty).

Via the RMI Portal - You can upload service documents over there.

But this comes back to the fact that the car was supposed to have been serviced in August 2025, but the invoice for this service is dated February 2026, so being serviced by an MG Dealer or not, and being registered on the system, or not, becomes irrelevant because the service is 6 months late.

Yep - I wouldn't take the risk, except they make a really good price. But even then, if you have a problem it may get expensive.

I would reject the car.

The user/owner is never able to see as I understand it, to see or access the digital record for the car. The only proof you have is the paperwork produced for the service and the trust that it's been properly uploaded to MG in order to maintain the 7 year warranty.
It would be great to be able to see the records on a read only basis to put your mind at rest, there would have to be safeguards so that they couldn't be accessed by anybody without legitimate reason.

Im a little confused. is the first service not due 12 months after its first registration. Surely its not an earlier date? That not something i considered when i got first service
I suppose the most common reason for having a car serviced before it's 12/24/36 months is if it's high mileage, and you reach the service mileage before the due date, but you can still have a service done before it's due date if it's convenient, and when a dealer sells a car, they should give it a service/check over prior to it's sale anyway.

There was a minor bust up between Motorpoint and MG over the first service authenticity.

The situation is now, that if the Warranty is needed, MG Motors will decide whether to honour the Warranty. Having said that, that decision will relate to what was missed because the service was not carried out to the letter. Batteries etc should still be covered.

I have accepted that now, as my experiece with the ZS was good, and hopefully with his MG4 it will be the same, touching wood as I type.... X Fingers

MG stte that they give a month leeway either side of the service date ....In my case, the service by Motorpoint was carried out 3 months early......???

I can tell you right now what their answer will (most likely) be, should this position ever arise .... ;)

If it was me I'd be rejecting the car for being mis-sold.
