Correct procedure (stopping at traffic lights)

The MG4 manual suggests using Autohold at traffic lights and says the following on how to use it. I didn't realise pressing the brake again released autohold.

Yes, but the whole system is called Auto hold, it keeps the standard brakes applied, not the parking brake (the parking brake light doesn't illuminate).

At least the Autohold stays active in the MG, in the Kia I had before you had to switch it on for every journey. The number of times I forgot and the car started to move after I relaesed the brake pedal.

I hereby propose to rename "handbrake" to "fingerbrake", since 1 (one) fingeris really enough, you don't need a whole hand(anymore) to activate that handbr... sorry fingerbrake, right?

I use Autohold and never touch the selector unless I know I'm going to be stationary for a while, such as waiting outside a shop etc. If you sit in Autohold longer than the car likes, it swaps to Parking brake anyway.

To be fair, don't think there is a "correct"
procedure, as such. It's whatever you want to do, whatever your comfortable with.
As with a lot of things, each to their own.

I've only noticed two differences in my MG4. Auto-hold keeps the brake lights on which may be a little annoying for other drivers at night. Touching the throttle (should it be called potentiometer in EVs) to restart with the Parking brake on produces a noticeable clunk/jerk as the Parking brake disengages while the Auto-hold release is as smooth as silk. Probably just me as usual.

Reckless1957, if this isn't autohold, why does it only work if the autohold button is switched to on (light on) and the autohold icon illuminates green on the display? And why does the instruction manual call this autohold? If the PB is on the icon is red on the display, not green.

Yes the auto hold is great, but you can often be stuck at a set of traffic lights for 2 or 3 minutes, and for me, that's too long on auto hold, that's why I'd 'Park' just to be sure and safe.

Our Honda is more patient, it waits about 10 minutes before automatic brake hold (as the Japanese call the system) automatically switches to the parking brake.

Auto hold activates the parking brake ('handbrake') - it applies it when you press the brake pedal down. It's the same as flicking the parking brake switch up manually.

The P mode transmission mode also applies the same parking/handbrake and also disengages the transmission.

Hill hold assist uses the disc brakes to temporarily hold the vehicle and prevent role back on hills.

Autohold doesn't apply the handbrake initially, it works in similar way to the hill hold. As others have said it will apply the parking brake after few minutes of non movement.
