I guess I just want to vent a bit, I went to visit family near Cardiff on a 95 mile journey. I set off fully charged in the standard range 175 miles on the GOM.
Arrived with 30 miles range left but that’s ok as I was on cruise control all the way enjoying aircon and radio on averaging 3 miles per kWh.
There is a 50kW ccs charger within walking distance that I’ve used before with success so I was happy enough to take the car down at 9am for an hours charge and then set off home this time being more conservative with the driving style.
This is where it seem to go wrong, that 50kW charger was swarco and at the time (18th September 2022 9am) the app wouldn’t let me login and there own map showed that they had no chargers in the country. Couldn’t charge by contactless bank card and ten minutes ringing for support went unanswered.
Went back to the house for a plan B.
IKEA had a 50kW charger so my family member had to follow me there as it was a 15 minute drive, I plugged in a went back to the house for a cuppa.
Checked the mg app and the charge rate was 15kW, that’s slow but at least it’s charging, maybe I’m staying for lunch!
No, after an hour and a half I checked the app again too see if it had speeded up to my dismay find it had stopped charging all together! 45% battery I had. I wasn’t going to go back and just start up the charge again so decided to head home.
I’ve used Gloucester services before so headed there, it was 65 miles away and had 75 miles range. Arrived and found three of the four bays in use and the second car in front of me taking the last bay of course. This is the way for us ev driver at the moment!
I decided to head into Gloucester and use an instavolt which had a spare bay. Arrived and started charging, got 30kW rate which was okishand charged to 100 mile range. Spent about 45 minutes getting a snack and window shopping. Completed the journey and got home with 33 miles left.
I did call grid serve about the ikea charger and they will refund the charge but could not explain why it stopped. The guy did mention that all the other vehicle charging logs showed a similar 15kW charge rate.
I did not contact swarco.
Quite disappointing as with my old car I could have don’t the round trip with a third of a tank!
Thanks for reading, I’m still learning and have only done 2k miles in an EV.
