Who pays the final ballon payment at the end of a PCP plan ?.
Nobody I would hazard a guess

I can imagine some people may want to keep the car, I would have done had it been economical, but defo NOT on their terms, I did ring Santander to see if they were amenable to a deal, it was an emphatic NO, THEIR CHOICE,!
Surely it would have saved them a lot of money and hassle to let the customer keep the car, but like battery technology, I'm less familiar with how financial services work.

Like most EV drivers, I neither know nor care what type of battery my car has, and I just charge it when it needs charging, this works well enough for me.

Good way to be but a small proportion of us of us are afflicted with "the need to know".
Especially if what you are experiencing is different to what you have discovered to date and
some salesman, service guy/gal suggest something that doesn't make sense.

Maybe there's a vaccine for it? ( that may/will replace it with some other "problem".)
I have a long history of chasing battles that that were badly chosen. Too old, not giving up now.

Will I keep my MG until it carks? Probably given 1997 hilux surf that cannot be killed languishing in the bush on the property. Choice of MG was partially driven by fond memories of excursions with a girlfriend in MG 1964 (Oxford) woody estate chasing surf, and unusual places to do it.

I never worried about engine “degradation” in my ICE vehicles, it is just accepted that ICE loses horsepower over its lifetime, and so I think it should equally be accepted a battery will lose some range.

Sure you can take care of your battery with certain charging regimes, as you replace oils and filters in your ICE, but in the end some degradation will happen regardless.
