EV tariff increases the daily tariff !

We are on Octopus Go.

We've now replaced our boiler with an air-source heat pump, so run one of the hot water cycles during the cheap overnight.

The heat pump also doesn't let the house go below its 'set back' temperature which we have set at 18 degrees, so it does a bit of work overnight.

I like to put the dishwasher on overnight anyway, but not the washing machine as a) it is too noisy and b) I think it is best to hang up the clothes ASAP and it doesn't have an accurate timer.

Have solar and battery but on colder days the battery seems to run out in the evening. When the really cold weather comes we will either have to switch to Cosy (and miss out on the cheapest prices but get several cheap-ish slots during the day) or get an extra battery installed.

Our washing machine has an odd timer, but I am able to set it so that the early part of the cycle (the most energy intense) occurs towards the end of the off peak time and the whole program finishes around 6:30, so the damp clothes don't sit in the machine for long.

I am on E ON Next and I get 7.5P from midnight to 06:00 so the car is set to charge then, also despite having had our washing machine for 4 years my wife has discovered it does a delayed wash cycle. So we set that for after midnight as well. We do not got to bed early so the washing machine is 30-45 minutes. Clothes get put on hangers and hung around the house and we fire up a dehumidifier. We come down to dry clothes and around 1 1/2 litres of water which she saves and uses in the steam iron. Win Win....

I am on intelligent octopus. It's between 23:30 and 5:30.
Having 2 EVs though that quite regularly need both charging I have found out that it is quite easy to exploit it.
What I do is plugging in the car that needs more charging. This is finished by 5:30. I wake up at that time to walk the dog. I swap the cars and the cheap rate goes all the way till 7:30 or even 8:00 some times.

This allows me to spare the batteries and rump up the heat pump till we leave so then the house maintains temperature for quite a few hours before the heat pump kicks in again.

All other white appliances are also used overnight.

This way I avoid using any of the expensive daily juice even in the coldest days of winter.

Summer time with batteries and solar is happy days 😀

Not anymore with the changes coming to IOG in january, 6hrs only and any extra is full rate. been changed due to the gaming of the system that has been going on, big chat online at the moment with one of the octopus execs

Hmpff...was good while it lasted.
Thanks for the heads up!

Sadly this goes against the idea of greener nights. I have found that in trying to use greener nights for a month I tended to discharge deeper waiting for the greener night which then meant I was close to or over a 6 hour session. I think Ill just go back to how I was before.

I got the email too. Then rated them 0 in the survey. The start I suspect of IGO rates climbing

Agree, I tried to do the same was offend down to 20% or below, the infuriating thing was when they changed what night it was going to be, and pushed it back
It does say at the top of the Greener nights page that if a night disappears it will still count, I have checked and this does happen.

I think they just stop advertising it if the weather changes.

How big is your battery?
Was that a question to me?

We've got the 9.5kWh.

Have realised it takes nearly 4 hours to charge within our 5 hour charging window there would be no point getting another big one. However, another smaller one might be worth it, like a 5kWh.

It would be useful for Summer when we sell off the surplus in the evening peak, for as long as that tariff remains.

I will see what deal Givenergy offer us.

Always read this thread. But not got a Scooby, what the Hell your on about.
Always like to read about folk saving money, though. 🙂👍
Yeah we've got at least two discussions going on in parallel!

One about home batteries and one about Intelligent Octopus Greener nights changes.

The theme I suppose is that both are related to the cheap overnight tariffs and making the most of these.

Normally when there is a thread with two discussions going on in parallel, one of the discussions relates to the thread and the other one is absolute nonsense. This is unique as you say in that they are related.
