Free Octopus Electricity

They were already providing the greener days information (now correctly rebranded as greener nights).

They are just gamifying it a bit by linking to Octopoint credits.

Behavioural economics isn't it?

Early adopters would be more likely to be carbon-aware (I check the carbon intensity most days) but newbies to EVs might not be aware of that kind of thing but could be responsive to points and rewards.

Realised that the Greener Nights points system is for those who use Intelligent Octopus.

So not us who are stuck with regular (unintelligent) Go.

Makes sense, since there is no incentive otherwise to avoid plugging in during the non-windy nights.

One thing you give up when signing up for the Greener Nights bonus is that you can't also be in the demand response scheme.

Could be a difficult decision between the two for those eligible for both, who would have to consider which one is most likely to offer the best rewards given their usage and ability to be flexible.

As in Savings Sessions? I'm in all three - have Ohme charger on Intelligent Go, get free electricity, usually Sundays from 14:00 to 15:00, Greener Nights points and savings sessions where we get paid a few pennies for cutting use, normally between 18:00 and 19:00.

Saver Session tonight 18:00 to 19:00 funnily enough.

Apologies, it isn't savings sessions but rather the PowerUps scheme.

"To take part in Greener Nights, you’ll need to:
  • Have smart meter which we are connected to and getting half hourly readings from
  • Be on Intelligent Octopus
  • Not be part of PowerUps – another of our flexibility schemes."
So the demand response scheme in question is 'PowerUps' which I'm going to investigate since I can't use the GivBack scheme as an Octopus customer.

[Update: I forgot Power Ups is only available in East Anglia]

Aye. Free electricity in East Anglia. I didn't know about that either.

Very handy as I'm down to 9%, been waiting for the next burst of wind just for carbon intensity reasons but now it is going to be free as well!
