Granny/3 pin charger from Amazon

I wish you all would stop talking about ‘Granny’ like that. Saying that every car should come with a ‘Granny’ etc etc. It’s ageist and sexist, and I doubt you would really like someone extra in your household 🤣🤣🤣
I don't know the provenance of the Granny term but it has become very common. Happy to use a better one if we can make it stick.

What is a better term?

3-pin as used by the OP?

Might not work outside the UK/commonwealth/Italy though.

Would be interested to know what our Continental cousins use.

Indeed. I'd never heard the term before joining this forum.
I think it must be a British thing.
In Australia we just call them "240 volt chargers", "Wall Chargers" or sometimes "trickle chargers".
Only time I ever hear the term is here

I believe the term was adopted, as it was handy to be able to charge your car using an ordinary 240v socket when visiting your Granny. As a granny (and great-granny actually), it comes in handy for me when visiting the younger members of my family.

Thanks

"240 volt chargers"
But they would be 110v in the USA.

"Wall Chargers"
That sounds like what we use for a more powerful unit, which would go on the wall of the house/garage and not just stretch across the floor.

"trickle chargers"
I think this is the best so far.

Another suggestion would be something like "Household charger" because it runs at household power levels rather than special power. But that might seem a bit strange and I'm not sure it would take on. Also the more powerful chargers are attached/connected to the household as well so might not differentiate them.

Any other countries have a better solution to this?

The car refers to it as slow charging I believe, so maybe we just call them slow chargers, in line with fast charger and rapid charger? I guess we would have to agree that anything under 7kW would then be classed as slow? Come to think of it I’m not sure what the car calls it when hooked up to a 7kW charger… so my reasoning might fall apart there.

I’ve often wondered if someone would push back against the use of that title. Henceforth I shall try to remember to refer to it as the “Portable Apparatus for Power Augmentation” or PAPA for short.
Surely that goes a long way towards placating one’s female relatives ?

Yes, I believe there are ones with control for the amps, I was planning on getting one of those. I am getting a home charger however, I didn’t expect I would be getting my car as soon as I did so it hasn’t been installed yet, the granny charger is more of a temp thing but I’d still like to get a decent one.
Do what one of my neighbours did in the same situation of the car arriving before his home charger was installed. He knocked on my door and asked if I had a granny charger and could he borrow it?

Luckily my MG4 had come with one and he returned it a few days later.
