Hastings YouDrive cancelled my insurance citing harsh braking & acceleration

Hastings YouDrive cancelled my policy citing a low score for “harsh braking and acceleration,” despite my MG4’s minimal use and my long accident-free history. This system uses a tracker that links to a smartphone app to observe your driving. The MG4’s braking and torque characteristics explain why this is likely a telematics misinterpretation. Has anyone else experienced something similar? I'm worried about the cancellation affecting the cost of my insurance.

OMG, i had no idea this was even possible with these "blackboxes". Why not just charge you more money. Usually having a policy cancelled is indeed a reason for other insurance companies to look upon you negatively. Hopefully in this case you can argue with Hastings about unfair treatment and get them to reconsider.

Just looked through the advertisement bumph for Hastings. There is a right of appeal especially as its low usage, and they do not share the info with other companies ???? so you do not need to divulge it unless specifically asked.
How much cheaper was it than a standard policy? sounds both a good idea and horrendous at the same time.

Most of the time they ask if you have had insurance cancelled.

I had Aviva refuse to renew my policy ,no reason given . So ,when I moved to my current provider, I answered no to the cancellation question because technically they hadn't cancelled my policy

Is the black box linked to a camera?
If it is not, does it realise that if something/someone steps out in front of you the correct thing to do is harsh braking

Does the car know if it is pulling out of a junction, onto a roundabout or joining another road from a slip road?
In which case harsh acceleration might be a good idea

Does the black box know a good way to maintain the discs and pads in an electric car is with forced harsh braking?

What is the definition of "harsh"

That's different - your current policy was ending and the insurer declined to offer a new insurance contract, so answering No is correct. A cancellation is the insurer terminating a current policy, to which you must answer Yes when (not if) asked.

A "low-score"? Well, I read that as you are a dangerous driver because you are not braking or accelerating enough

Insured with them here and had to let the Hasting's app connect to my phone for a month after taking out the policy or pay extra. Made sure to disconnect it once the month was up but had no issues either. Not sure i would use again though.

Last year I mistakenly wandered into the blackbox deal by Hastings and duly transferred back to normal asap. Renewed today as they were cheapest (after a number of searches and a discussion)

My daughter has Hastings insurance with a black box as it was the cheapest option after she passed her test. The score is cumalative so if you are reguarly braking and accelerating harshly it will give you a lower score. It measures other factors like sharp cornering, mobile phone use, and speeding. She's been careful, but her lowest scores are for braking and acceleration. However, her overall score is 83% so fingers crossed she'll be able to ditch the blackbox at renewal time.

It’s not a black box thankfully, but the dashcam I have can give you a drivers score as well, it would freak out over a normal 10 minute commute so I turned the function off after a few days, but I can certainly see how one of these black boxes can give the impression of bad driving when in fact the driving is to the circumstances.

Speedbumps would sometimes be logged as “driving impacts” same with opening or closing the boot by a passenger, regen 3 sometimes triggered harsh braking, but sometimes didn’t. I’ll own up to harsh acceleration though haha

Never let your insurance company watch what you're doing. I fitted a dashcam with an impact sensor, it's always triggering on potholes, some of which are unavoidable. You'd probably be penalised for that. It's just another way for insurance companies to justify increasing premiums. I can't see how anybody keeping up with traffic would get a good score.

I was offered a black box on a Hasting policy as it was the cheapest. My daughter has it on her car but she is a learner and her car israrely used. It gives you a score every trip which is fine for a learner. I decided to go with Admiral, pay and bit more to avoid the black box Big Brother problem.

I was insured with Hastings for my motorcycle insurance, I’m in my 70s and have been riding motorcycles since I was 16 never had a claim, accident all my biking life. They refused to renew my policy 3 years ago no reason given. Insured with bike sure no problem.

That's terrible. Parasites the lot of um.
Happy to take ya money, for all those years. But when you get just a little bit more of a risk, (in their eyes) dispite your excellent driving record, they kick you in touch.
I know some are gonna say, that's just business, get over it. Doesn't make it right. Bastards.
