I have an MG ZS EV registered Dec 2019. It's battery has now failed at under 22,000 miles . It had no service in 2021.

Their service department tell that tests show that the battery is at fault. They are now preparing to strip the battery to discover the precise fault.
Hopefully they will get to the bottom of it and the issue will be easily fixed.

If you did need a new battery then hopefully a suitable one would be available second hand from somewhere. Maybe Cleevely EVs would be able to help you since MG might only be interested in replacing with a new unit which would be very expensive.

Do keep us informed as to what the dealer says!

When this happened the battery was about 70% charged. The local MG dealership advised running the battery down to about 10% and recharging using the household 3 pin plug supply cable. I did this but no recharge occurred. I then drove the car to the dealership. Their service department tell that tests show that the battery is at fault. They are now preparing to strip the battery to discover the precise fault. There has been no recent collision. About 2 weeks prior to this event the car was at the MG dealers as the heating /AC fan was cutting out. Fan replaced.

I note that you said there have been no recent collisions. Have there been any previous collisions which may have resulted in battery damage?

MG do have a policy re missed services which implies that if the missed service is irrelevant to the current problem, the warranty may not be invalidated. We are waiting to hear . If MG will not cover this, I would be interested to hear what others would offer as options. The car [even with intact battery] is probably worth only £7 to £8K so refitting a new battery probably wouldn't be worthwhile. I know that second hand batteries are available but [being 80] I am not in a position to be able to assess how good an option this would be. Am I faced with just selling the rest of the undamaged car to a breaker and spending money on a second hand MG with an intact service history ?
Any opinions or advice would be welcome. Peter.
You can get a ZS EV battery on eBay used £1200-£2000k get a garage to change it and your old pack can be traded in aswell ;)

Sadly this remains unresolved. The dealership has now had the car for 3 months. Apparently special equipment is required to safely open up the battery [Incidentally this dealership has never had to do this before]. This was ordered from MG but has only just arrived and work has not yet started. I hope to be able to update you all reasonably soon. Meanwhile, managing with one car has not proved to be a problem.

Hi Pete - Thanks for the update on your car.
It just amazes me why in cases where something as involved as pack removal, then a strip and diagnose a major battery fault, why don't they have one of these two options ????.
Option 1 - A couple of mobile specialist EV senior EV techs, who have a vehicle that is specially equipped with all the necessary tooling / testing equipment etc.
They travel around the country dealing with major involved battery problems like yours.
Option 2 - A central location in the U.K. where these types of cases can be transported to ?.
I know VAG have adopted both options one and two !.
The static centre is in Milton Keynes I believe.
When the specialist tooling finally arrives at the dealership that has your car is stranded, I assume that they have the necessary EV trained senior techs that are authorised to use it ???.
Waiting 3 months just for tooling to be shipped, is not really acceptable tbh.
Can I suggest that you would NOT be waiting 3 months if MG had been paying for a hire car for this length of time.
You certainly have a higher patience level than me !.

Patience is probably not the right word.
If MG do not provide those facilities, what can you do?
I suppose the word is impotence.

If anyone is near Kent this garage seems to know their way around EV batteries, though I suppose it might invalidate the warranty if work is done by someone who isn't an MG technician.

I have complained to MG, but haven't yet had a response.

Wow, they are 5 miles from me, and I wasn't aware they were there! I shall have to call in and have a chat.

Progress at last. Equipment to safely proceed eventually arrived from MG and the battery has now been opened, revealing a single bank of failed cells. Parts have ben ordered and MG have agreed to cover all of this under warranty, which is of course good news. Apparently MG need to intercept the cells when they arrive in the country and charge them to the same level as the remaining cells before sending them on to the Dealer for fitting etc. However, by the time we get the car back it will have been at the Dealership for at least 4 months, which can only be described as an appalling level of service.

Have MG been providing you with a replacement car while waiting ?.

Well ….. If correct, that is probably the reason why it has taken them SO long for them to organise tooling etc !.
Providing a replacement car does have a huge cost associated to it.
Therefore without this additional cost, their urgency to get this problem resolved is lethargic to say the least.
I was really asking questions that I already suspected I had the answer to !.
No replacement / hire car to be paid for then absolutely no rush getting the car fixed !.
