Keeping track of my MG4 (efficiency)

Current overall combined efficiency, after 27,653 km: 15.1 kWh/100km (4.12 mi/kWh).

Two notes for this month:

November brought some cold weather (for us, anyway), pretty much between 5 and 15 degrees and also with quite some rain. The immediate consequence of this is a huge bump in consumption, with my second highest monthly figure ever.
I suspect December and January will be even worse.

I finally did the 900 km roundtrip I mentioned two months ago, being that the trip is composed of two legs of exactly 400 km each.
The trip is doable, but it does mean adding an extra 45 minutes (in each direction) in relation to what I'm used to doing with the family's PHEV. And, admittedly, this is quite a bit to add to an already long trip.
Still, everything went OK and it was good for adding experience to my EV luggage, as I did a lot of "fast" DC charging, which is something me and the car were not used to.

Already have the same trip planned for the end of December and I'm taking the MG4 again.

I too can post my figures for November, which look OK. My first post which was a very accumulated total of 84:41 hours gave a average of 4.2mls/kWh during warmer months, so I'm not surprised to see this reduced now to 3.5mls/kWh.
It was interesting to note that after the reset of the accumulated total the range on the GOM also changed, which initially read 40% battery and 82 mls range, after the reset this changed to 39% and 88mls range. It's been reported elsewhere that it changes the GOM....comments please.

Today's post is not about consumptions but rather tyres, as last week I went and replaced all four of them.

Looking back, I have never felt 100% safe while on the original tyres (Continental PremiumContact C 215/50 R17 95V). Ever since I received the car (in the summer of '24) it always felt like something was off with the tyres, in the sense that they would not adhere to the road the way I thought they would and also that when they started skidding it was usually in an unpredictable way.

Little did I know that this was nothing compared to when the roads started getting wet... In these conditions, the car simply became plain dangerous and actually felt like it was sitting on hard plastic wheels.

To be fair, when it rained a lot and films of water started to form on the surface of the road, going through them at higher speeds was never a problem - the tyres would deal with removing the water from under them very well and the car always felt safe in those situations.

It was when the roads were just wet that things became horrible, to the point where if I was going downhill on a steeper-than-usual road and lightly tapped the brake pedal, the rear wheels would instantly lock. Of course, ABS and ESP did their thing, but you could sense that adherence was almost non-existent.

At some point, all this actually made me wonder if it could be something related with the car's safety itself.

Now, as if the above wasn't enough, in the last couple of months or so, the external part of the front tyres started degrading quickly - like, literal pieces started coming off at an alarming rate. This was around 28,000 km in.

This was the final straw, and while the tyres still had some thread in them and not all had pieces coming off, I decided to get rid of all four.


I went for Michelin's Primacy 5 and I am happy to confirm that the difference is night and day. Having driven 750+ km with them (in all conditions), it's actually a relief to finally be sure that a) I'm not totally crazy and making things up in my head and b) this isn't an issue related with the car itself.


Bottom line: based on my experience, the Continental PremiumContact C are, by far, the worst tyres I've ever tried in a car, in 25+ years of driving. They are so bad (and the difference is now obviously so huge) that it has me wondering how can such a low quality tyre be fitted to a new car (and have "Continental PremiumContact" written on them).
 
The stock tyres are not Euro spec continental tyres they are Chinese spec.
You can now get the Contact C in the UK. I saw it available when getting our last tyre to replace an original with a nail in it.

Sure, of course. But it's much more than just that: these are downright terrible, regardless of the brand or origin.

There are Chinese branded tyres out there much better than these ones (and costing 1/3 of the price).

Again, these tyres have no place in such a car and no serious tyre brand should allow their name on them.
 
It's not called PremiumContact C(rappy) for no reason. It's a budget spec tire for budget spec car. A brand name does not make a tire great.

I do wonder how consumption will be affected with the new tires.
 
It's not about Chinese branded tyres that you can buy here, it's these specific contis that are crap no one is disputing that, you can't buy the stock tyres here
It's the rubber compound that makes the difference, and the fact that these tyres are not perfectly shaped.

By far, the car outperforms the tyre in that regard.

A brand name does not make a tire great.
I can agree with that, but only up to a point. Maybe I'm just being naif, but I wasn't expecting a well-known brand delivering such bad tyres, worst than unbranded ones. And I do question if the bad reputation the brands get for this is worth it.

I do wonder how consumption will be affected with the new tires.
I'm expecting it to be a bit higher, but not by much. We'll see.

Well, you can buy them in Europe, that's for sure.
You can buy continental premium contacts in Europe but not an exact version of the stock tyre, that is the point Im making the ones that came with the car were specific to the Chinese market with a Chinese specific rubber compound.

There are numerous threads on how crap the stock tyres are.

We are however going round in circles, at the end of the day the tyres are shite
