Hi all. Just a quick update on my situation. Dealer rang back a few times all with dismal offers. So I emailed him asking for a full preorder deposit refund, citing the low ball part ex price, inaccurate settlement figure and not being offered the website deal. That expectedly led to a quick roll back. He insisted the settlement figure he quoted was the one sent to me formally later (it wasn't. It was the full balance before the early settlement interest rebate and my wife was there!) I also mentioned that the used car manager sent me emails telling me my car is sought after. So now he said with part ex, I had a couple of hundred in equity when there was a deficit of 4k when I went for the test drive! Yea. And now he said yes, he can match the website deal. But I also pointed out it was for 8k miles annually and I am looking at 6-7k. So lots of rowback. I am due to drop my current car in for service and we agreed we would discuss more in person.
But yes, I will check out other dealers. So, should I stick with my current dealer if the prices are good? Personally, I have trust issues. But then again, business is business. Car dealers do not have the best reputation, especially around London area! And in fairness, the cars they delivered to me before have had no problems. A rattle in my first car was fixed during service and that was it.

I understand that price haggling is part of the process but what you describe takes it to another level.
What I find weird is the fact that he would not match the site offer. Can you elaborate on this? Is this the finance contribution? the APR? What exactly?
That would be the thing to put me off.

When I went last Tuesday, I had not checked the website deal. Or maybe I did and forgot about it. Anyway, when I contacted them in August, he was all welcoming and genial. And fair enough, the finance packages have not been finalised yet. But I remembered the Sealion 7 deals which is similiarly priced. I said 7k annual mileage, payment around £500 a month, deposit not more than 5k. His initial numbers were 9k deposit! Because he said I have a shortfall in my partex of 4k. After some to and fro, he said he could improve the part ex and bring it down to 6k deposit. I said I would think about it. I also asked him to give me a breakdown, which he refused. All just verbal and scribbles on a piece of paper.
And then I checked the website, was even more disappointed. I understand we are all trying to get maximum value. but this is 2025. Many things are open and transparant and publicly available. It was clear that I knew a lot about the car and not a mug. I much prefer people who are at least savvy enough to know who to scam and come clean from the getgo. I am not a big haggler. I might ask for a bit of extras like the metallic paints etc on top of the published deal in light of the fact that I am a returning customer, and that I put a preorder deposit as an act of good faith. And that good faith deserves some return. Quid pro quo. Not because of compassion, but customer goodwill and feedback is good for business.
I also thought that generally after 2 years into a 4 year PCP deal, it should start to break even. My car is a limited launch edition. Supposedly sought after. I had ceramic coating (didn't even mention that!). Lower mileage than PCP limits. So to be told I am 4k in deficit is a bit shocking. And he went back and forth to speak to his manager last Tuesday and couldn't really improve his offer by more than 1.5k And i even said I might get an S5 at the same time which should mean a better offer. So of course, lots of pressure. After I left, phone calls, messages, offer only valid until end of month. And when I finally said I will cancel my preorder, somehow, the manager had a change of heart. Other alarm bells include him continuously repeating "I am on your side!".
Seriously, kids these days. Did he really think I was born yesterday? The only person on my side is me and my family. Nothing wrong with that. We are all here to fend for ourselves. No issues. To think I would fall for such a lame statement reflects more on his naivety and dishonesty than anything. Am I being too harsh or is this unacceptable even in car sales?

Hell; I am putting in a 10k trade in and for a year PCP with 12k miles per year it came to 450 per month for the launch version.
As for the trade in value; I am not sure if he tried to skin you or not. Have you tried any other sites to see what will you be getting?
You mention launch edition and ceramic coating; sorry to say this but extras don't count for nothing at trade in values.
To give you an example; my Tesla has the FSD. Foolish of me but lets not go there. Even Tesla doesn't pay for it if I was to trade it in. I mean even on their PCP calculator if you spec for it you get the same residual without it...and it is £6.8k now!

If I were you I would look into the level of after sales service that you have received so far. If you are happy with it stick with them. Otherwise walk away.

And yes, the limited editions are sought after because of the trick parts that they have (LSD, semi-active suspension). and ultimately, the PCP repayments should cover for the depreciation. Ceramic coating, yea, that's off my own back. But keeps the paintwork looking good!

I get nightmare stories of other owners having problems with their new cars but haven't had any problems with my two from them. But they were not MGs, so not sure if the MG support will be as reliable. But yes, there is that aspect of the devil you know. I would rather a good dealer that does a good PDI, and deliver trouble free cars and no after sales required than having to find out how good their support is!

As with all ev's at the moment I wouldn't guarantee on coming out of any PCP deal in positive equity, unless you obviously put a hefty deposit down, even then I'd be expecting to write some of that off

Depreciation I am sorry to say but is not linear. Through PCP we pay the same amount every month. But this an average based on the total depreciation. If you check online any graphs you will notice a massive drop on the residual value during the first two years which then becomes more linear.
So based on your feedback (2 out of 4 years PCP) you are at the worst possible spot for a trade in.

You also mention you got cars from this dealer before but they were not MGs. I am usually weary of dealerships that tend to sell more than one brand. This can lead to issues further down the line.
A personal experience. Wife got her BYD from a local dealer who sells both BYD and Ford. Most of their service staff/engineers are oriented on Ford. So when we had an issue with it we had to wait weeks for a solution due to lack of staff...

One of the main reasons I put my order with MG Chorley is that they are MG only on that site.
 
I'm part-exing a ICE car.
He means when you come to the end of the PCP with your new purchase - a part ex will help, for sure. I think premium vehicles will hold their value better than others, but the residuals on MG4s and MG5s have been very low, partly caused by all MG's discounts.

When I got my model 3 the only proper EVs in the market with a sensible (to a point) price were the Leaf, model 3 and I pace
Now there are hundreds of different models in all categories.
300 miles range seems to be the norm, not a premium.
The IM for example, I reckon in 4 years it will come with solid state batteries.
Imagine where the residuals of the current ones will go....
 
Residual value of EVs is horrendous, regardless brand or specs.
Residuals are significantly higher for premium vehicles (ignoring the ultra expensive market). It isn't the same at all levels. Teslas, for example, generally command better residuals than MGs.

Actually as I understand it the main factors in the UK are not technology but:
  • Dramatic cost reductions in new EVs driven by dumping (tariffs elsewhere) and EV mandates.
  • Massive sales of motability and company fleet EVs cascading off lease onto the second hand market.
  • Low private new sales due to fear / uncertainty / doubt from anti-EV propaganda (early adopters already have an EV).
  • Enormous competition, far more makers than in the past, many Chinese but from all over.

Prices of new EVs are likely to continue to drop because in the long run they are inherently cheaper to make.

Increased technology - such as ADAS systems mandated by EuroNCAP - actually raises prices, which is one reason why UK EVs cost roughly double what they do in China.
 
New to the brand and EVs here. Test drove the IM6 a few days ago. Totally blew me out of the water. Totally don't get the negative reviews. I think some just don't get it. For the Chinese, cars are luxury items. Not toys. The more premium, the more it should be comfortable and luxurious. The IM6 is like this bubble that insulates you from the outside. You can still perceive it, but it's definitely more distant. Overall, it just feels like a high speed train, gliding smoothly across all terrain. Steering is not lively and very neutral. Yes it is not "fun", But fun can get tiring on long journeys. I have a young child on board. I want fun, I go for an MX5 or RX8. Overall very impressed. Even the driving aids can be tuned down to be hardly intrusive. Didn't notice it much.
So why have I not pulled the trigger? Dealers. Despite the offers advertised on the MG website, the dealer I went to quoted me something much more expensive. And low-balled the car I bought from them 2 years ago for part-ex! So I made another enquiry on the MG website and another dealer got in touch. I told them I am ready to talk business. No reply since. And I am potentially going to get the S5 as well. I would think they would be trying hard to get my business. But hey, I get it. Plenty of business. Who cares about me? Do you all have any decent dealers to recommend?
Hi lokych , I agree with your car review completely. There are a few problems that I hope a firmware upgrade will fix, but overall I love it. It’s a very comfortable, fast, and a pleasure to drive. At 78 years old, I don’t want another race car anyway, three was enough.
