Regarding SIM card ... the A34 will take a nano SIM; your old phone may have been a micro SIM (although I don't think it's that old - nano SIMs have been in use for several years now).

I think the old SIM is a nano-SIM. It's the same size as the empty hole in the full SIM card array that originally held the one that's now in the phone.

Security people will explain why each of the payment methods is more secure than its predecessor. Google Pay / Apple Pay are more secure than contactless cards because you have to unlock your phone to pay over a certain limit. And because of that extra security, the limit then is higher.

That's my problem, the phone has no SIM card tray where the manual and that video both say it should have one. But I have the "snap out the right size sim for your phone" card, from which the SIM has been snapped out. The missing SIM is the same size as the one in the old phone.

They can be pretty hard to spot, rather than look for the tray, have a look for the little round hole that you can push the tool into

Believe me, I have pushed the tool into that little round hole. It does nothing, and there is no tray there. Dùn Èideann, here I come.

It's still in the lap of the gods if I remember to take my phone with me when I go out. Or even if I remember where I saw it last. With this new phone that will probably change, give it time.

It can take quite a push to make them pop out, just ensure you are not prodding the microphone , dont ask how I know that.

Actually, sorted. I'm SO glad I didn't go back to the shop.

After I bought the phone I went into the shop across the road and bought a case for the phone. The shop assistant put the phone in the case and I didn't see how it was done.

Turns out the phone snaps into a sort of secondary half-clam case which is part of the new cover. I didn't realise this, and was trying to push the tool into a couple of holes the case had matching holes to expose. Don't know what they're for, but the case actually covered up the SIM tray completely. I realised when I looked closer at the whole gallery of photos in @siteguru's link, and then closer at the phone. I feel slightly silly now, but thanks to all you for your help.

The new phone is now working on the old SIM, so calls and texts received from now on should come into the new phone. I should know when the new SIM has the original number, because the old SIM will stop working.

They might not think to look here, but here's hoping.

I will get this sorted, and I can start emailing people and phoning landlines to get them to send me texts to repopulate the contacts list. I didn't have any photos on the phone I wanted - I usually use my camera in preference to the phone. (And at least when that dies, everything is on its memory card!) I have been through similar in the past, stressful, but it always gets fixed enough to move on.

One nice thing, looking at the specs page @siteguru linked to. The phone is supposed to be water-resistant to some extent. The shop said my phone died because water had got into it somehow. I have also had two cameras die on me from the same cause. (Although in 2011 I managed to dry my first smartphone out after it went through the washing machine. I just put it on a radiator all night, and it was fine!) It will be nice if this phone can cope with a shower of rain. It may need to, what with all these uncovered chargers.

Oh you mean the object... It's an 8 track cartridge. They ran in a loop so there was no end unlike cassette tapes and didn't need turning over.
