I don't see why the principle doesn't still apply though. If it has come to replace or refund, the attractions of "replace" are still there, surely.

Absolutely, at least they have still then made a sale with an element of profit and hopefully they would have still had a happy customer.

I agree that the principle could still apply, but I believe that it's the much tighter sales margins is why this option is rarely taken.

It does their public image no good at all. And it's hard to see why they'd prefer to hand back all the customer's money than replace the faulty vehicle, margins or no.
